What is High Availability?

Delayed Replication with Amazon RDS

Delayed replication” is one of the important features which were being supported in MySQL from 5.6 for a very long time. This induces an intentional lag in the slave, making it lag by the defined time interval.

For a long time this was not available with the RDS version of MySQL provided by AWS, Recently from the version 5.6.40, 5.722 and later versions this feature is available with all the regions.

Recently, I’ve been working with a customer to evaluate the different cloud solutions for MySQL. In this post I am going to focus on maintenance windows and requirements, and what the different cloud platforms offer.

Why is this important at all?

Maintenance windows are required so that the cloud provider can do the necessary updates, patches, and changes to our setup. But there are many questions like:

  • Is this going to impact our production traffic?
  • Is this going to cause any downtime?
  • How long does it take?
  • Any way to avoid it?

How To design a better Ansible Role for MySQL Environment ?

In our earlier stage of Ansible, we just wrote simple playbook and ad-hoc command with very long ansible hosts file. When we plan to use Ansible extensively in our daily production use case, we understand that simple playbooks don’t help to scale up to our expectation.

Database Objects migration to RDS/ Aurora (AWS)

The world of application and its related services are migrating more towards cloud, because of availability, Elasticity, Manageability etc. While moving the entire stack we need to be very cautious while migrating the database part.
