Interview mit Lukas und mir auf der DevOpsCon 2015 in Berlin, kurz nach dem Talk über Private Cloud mit OpenSource.

Auf der FrOSCon 10 in St. Augustin habe ich kürzlich ein Update zu unseren Erfahrungen mit dem Thema "Private Cloud mit OpenSource" gegeben. Leider sind noch nicht alle Probleme, über die letztes Jahr berichtet wurde, behoben, aber wir sind schon ein gutes Stück weiter und haben neue Stolperfallen gefunden und z. T. auch überwunden.

Leider habe ich mich mit der Zeit ein wenig getäuscht, da ich den Talk vorher schon einmal in gekürzter Form in 40 Minuten unterbringen musste, aber in der Präsentation den Countdown für die FrOSCon wieder auf 60 Minuten zu stellen vergessen hatte. Zwischenzeitlich war ich deswegen der Meinung, ziemlich hinterherzuhängen... Hoffe, es macht trotzdem ein bisschen Spaß, so blieb am Ende mehr Zeit für Fragen und Gespräche :)

Over on the codecentric blog I just published a new post on True KVM Live Migration with OpenStack Icehouse and Ceph based VM storage, outlining the process it took me to get this actually working. There were several issues to work around, some of them bugs in OpenStack, some of them home-grown issues.

Talking with Percona Live attendees last year I heard a couple of common themes. First, people told me that there is a lot of great advanced content at Percona Live but there is not much for people just starting to learn the ropes with MySQL. Second, they would like us to find a way to make such basic content less expensive.

Apache CloudStack is a turnkey orchestration platform to deliver IaaS clouds. As a cloud infrastructure scales to hundreds or thousands of servers, with production environments supporting multiple applications and services, high availability becomes a key requirement. Just as for OpenStack, it is possible to deploy the CloudStack management server in a multi-node installation. Since the management server uses a MySQL database to store the state of all its objects, the database could become a single point of failure. The CloudStack manual recommends MySQL replication with manual failover in the event of database loss. We believe there is a better way.

Imagine that two colleagues, Alice and Bob, issue a command to launch a new virtual machine at approximately the same moment in time. Both Alice’s and Bob’s virtual machines must be given an IP address within the range of IP addresses granted to their project. Let’s say that range is 192.168.20.0/28, which would allow for a total of 16 IP addresses for virtual machines [1]. At some point during the launch sequence of these instances, Nova must assign one of those addresses to each virtual machine.

How do we prevent Nova from assigning the same IP address to both virtual machines?

In this blog post, I’ll try to answer the above question and shed some light on issues that have come to light about the way in which OpenStack projects currently solve (and sometimes fail) to address this issue.

I spent the last 4 years at SkySQL/MariaDB working on versions of MySQL that could be “suitable for the cloud”. I strongly believed that the world needed a version of MySQL that could work in the cloud even better than its comparable version on bare metal. Users and administrators wanted to benefit from the use of cloud infrastructures and at the same time they wanted to achieve the same performance and overall stability of their installations on bare metal. Unfortunately, ACID-compliant databases in the cloud suffer from the issues that any centrally controlled and strictly persistent system can get when hosted on highly distributed and natively stateless infrastructures.
In this post I am not going to talk about the improvements needed for MySQL in the cloud - I will tackle this topic in a future post. Today I'd like to focus on the business side of RDS and Aurora.
