LinkedIn's MySQL Use Case

As many know, I have been working within the Espresso team at LinkedIn since 2012. Espresso is a schema-ed document store built upon MySQL.

Introducing Espresso - LinkedIn's hot new distributed document store

We eventually hope to open-source a version of Espresso which doesn't use LinkedIn's internal proprietary APIs.

Compile at CentOS 6.5 the new MySQL webscalesql-5.6.17 branch by Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, and Twitter

Looking to Hire a MySQL DBA or Developer?

“Why can’t I find an MySQL DBAs or Developers?” This morning I got a message from a very perplexed Human Resources person on why their ads on Linkedin were not getting any results. Several such emails, calls, or messages make it to me each week and I would like take this opportunity to cover this subject. MySQL DBAs and Developers are out there but there are reasons why they are not interested in your job posting.

1. Provide details — “Exciting new position in rapidly growing start up in an expensive city and we want you to know how to program in every programming language, be a recent university graduate (hopefully PhD or higher), with ten years of experience but please be under twenty three years of age. Must prefer stock options and left over pizza crusts over a regular salary. And be flexible.” No, most ads are not quite that bad but several are very, very close.

Percona Live MySQL Conference and Expo 2014: Things I’m looking forward to

The Percona Live MySQL Conference and Expo 2014 is just two months away. I’m very excited about this year’s event which continues our tradition of open technical discussions and inviting all parties to the table.

We have a great amount of technical talks from Oracle – I’m especially excited about future-focused talks shedding some light about what to expect in MySQL 5.7 and beyond. This content is best covered by developers actually designing the system and writing the code. We also have great coverage of MySQL alternatives from Percona and MariaDB. You can view the entire program here.

It is great to see well-rounded coverage of many …

How I use twitter to follow the MySQL Community

Here is a perfect post to read during your holidays :-)
There are many ways to get news on the internet : blogs, rss feeds, facebook, linkedin, twitter…
What I want to talk about here is how I use twitter to follow the MySQL Community and how I stay up to date of the latest news.
I use twitter only for focus on the MySQL news and the MySQL community, that’s why I would like to share this experience with you.

Step 1 : Choose your friends

Q: What is the most complicated with Twitter ?
A: Read all the tweets that we receive every day

Of course it can be complicated and that takes a long long time…
That’s why you must choose who is your best friends carefully.

Except for the MySQL rock stars, I advise you to use TweetStats before to blindly follow anyone who tweeted a dark grigri

It's alive!

LinkedIn has what they call "inDays" where employees may so something interesting which may not be directly related to their day job. I spent my inDay by porting my old WL820 project (External Language Stored Procedures) to MariaDB 5.3.

The code, as usual, is available on LaunchPad ... To get the branch, simply do:

bzr branch lp:~atcurtis/maria/5.3-wl820 The test cases pass... I haven't tested

Hate the dirty recruitment tactics

I hate it when recruiters reach out to you with a message indicating that they are looking for 'key positions' and when you follow up, the tone changes to "we're just looking for engineers." This happens all the time and the latest company to play this recruitment tactic is LinkedIn. Guys, can't you decide whether you are looking to fill a 'key position' or just an engineering position before reaching out to candidates? I can see that mentioning 'key position' will get a candidate's attention but this is just a low level tactic.
