Not long ago we had an internal discussion about security, and how to enforce a stricter set of rules to prevent malicious acts and block other undesired queries. ProxySQL came up as a possible tool that could help us in achieving what we were looking for. Recently, a support customer shared a graph with us that compared query throughput between today and yesterday as a confirmation that optimizing their server variables improved performance.

Do you want to compare workload between today and yesterday? This week and last week? Or this month and last month? You can do this by simply duplicating an existing data source of a graph, but add a time offset so it will render past data. You can specify past offsets in (s)econds, (m)inutes, (h)ours, (d)ays, (w)eeks and even (y)ears.

Say you want to graph query throughput from a certain time period and one day before that. To do this, select the “MySQL Overview” dashboard, and then click the header of “MySQL Questions” panel. The panel menu should appear:

In this post, we’ll examine how we’ve improved the GUI layout for Percona Monitoring and Management 1.5 by moving the Query Analytics (QAN) functions into the Grafana interface.

For Percona Monitoring and Management users, you might notice that QAN appears a little differently in our 1.5 release. We’ve taken steps to unify the PMM interface so that it feels more natural to move from reviewing historical trends in Metrics Monitor to examining slow queries in QAN.  Most significantly:

1. QAN moves from a stand-alone application into Metrics Monitor as a dashboard application
2. We updated the color scheme of QAN to match Metrics Monitor (but you can toggle a button if you prefer to still see QAN in white!)
3. Date picker and host selector now use the same methods as Metrics Monitor

Monyog MySQL Monitor v8.3.0 is a feature-rich release which adds a large number of user requests for quick access to relevant monitoring information, for ‘cross-plotting’ multiple servers in a unified chart and more.  Additionally, it adds a number of non-critical bug fixes.

Changes as compared to Monyog MySQL Monitor v8.2.0 include: Features:

Added option to set a distinct email distribution list for warning alerts and critical alerts. Trend Graph Analysis: Added option to group a single metric (which one you find most important) from different servers into one unified chart. This allows you to visually analyse a metric across servers at various points in time.

In this blog post, we’ll look at Percona Monitoring and Management’s pmm-admin list command.

The pmm-admin list command shows all monitoring services you have added using the pmm-admin add command. Starting with version 1.4.0, Percona Monitoring and Management (PMM) also lists external monitoring services when you run pmm-admin list, i.e., those services that monitor the backends not supported out of the box (such as PostgreSQL databases).

The secret to knowing what adjustments need to be made is to perform regular monitoring. Most databases offer dozens – if not hundreds – of performance metrics that you can assess.
