MySQL Workbench 5.2 AlphaMy understanding is the MySQL Workbench 5.2 has the core 5.1 modeling features as well as the new Query Browser. The Query Browser has been easy to use but the feature functionality is still in the alpha phase. Adding the Query Browser in the 5.2 release adds a nice dimension of being able to look at the data model, physical table and data very easily. So far I have
Today’s contradiction:
MySQL has server variables named new and
old.
The new variable can be set per-session and
globally, and is dynamic. The old variable is not
dynamic, and only global in scope. Both default to FALSE in MySQL
5.1.
According to the manual, the new variable:
was used in MySQL 4.0 to turn on some 4.1 behaviors, and is retained for backward compatibility.
That same page notes the following about the old
variable:
when old is enabled, it changes the default scope of index hints to that used prior to MySQL 5.1.17. That is, index hints with no FOR clause apply only to how indexes are used for row retrieval and not to resolution of ORDER BY or GROUP BY clauses.
That’s right — the …

The OpenSQL Camp 2009 web site is now ready for business, I've updated various pages and added some more information about the call for papers. I've also set up a Twitter account (no way without one nowadays, right?), which might also play an important role in the voting/rating of talks later on (Giuseppe came up with an interesting proposal for that).
So we're now seeking your input! Let me quote from the web pages directly:
OpenSQL Camp is a free conference of, by, and for the open-source database community of users and developers. The first OpenSQLCamp 2008 took place in Charlottesville, Virginia, …

[Read more]Tomas Ulin - Director MySQL Engineering
This could be your last chance to listen to and quiz Tomas Ulin on his detailed MySQL Cluster knowledge as he has recently moved from being the Cluster Engineering Director to looking after engineering for MySQL Server. Tomas was in charge for the vast majority of the 7.0 development cycle (and many releases before that) and maintained a very detailed knowledge of the technology – including writing some of the code.
Mat Keep will represent the product management team with some introductory material.
I will also be on hand for the Q&A.
The webinar (as always) is free and starts at 16:30 UTC (other timezones listed below) and you can register here. …

For the fourth time in a row, I will be speaking at FrOSCon, one of the most
charming open source events in Europe.
Hosted in the bright environment of the Department of Computer
Science of the University of Applied Sciences Bonn-Rhein-Sieg,
this event will get you hooked from the beginning. The
organization is done by volunteers, who have always done an
amazing job, with even better results than more expensive and
famous conferences.
This year, there will be some more action than ever before. In
addition to the main event, the organizers have given away a few
developers rooms, to let some projects build their own event
within the main one. There will be a Java subconference, and,
closer to my interests, the European edition of the OpenSQLCamp 2009,
which applies to all open …

There must be something that gets coders and barbecue together. In Australia, I was invited to a hackers barbecue, while at FrOSCon, the Saturday evening meal is a grill fest. It seems just right that the PHP coders in Germany are getting together with a BBQ Tour, starting on Monday, June 15, and touching seven German towns in one week. |
I will join the happy campers on Saturday, June 20, in Hamburg,
and finish off the tour in Kiel the next day.
The event is open. However, for …
