Become a MySQL DBA at Percona Live Amsterdam this October

There’s a new tradition that’s establishing itself in the MySQL community, and that’s the Percona Live Conference in Europe, which has been taking place for the past few years in addition to the long-standing MySQL User Conference in Santa Clara.

This year the conference takes place in Amsterdam once again following last year’s success and we’re looking forward to joining everyone there in October.

To kick things off, we were delighted to receive confirmation that our full day tutorial, Become a MySQL DBA, has been selected for the Tutorials Schedule of the conference.

We’ve conducted this tutorial in April this year at the Percona Live Santa Clara conference and it is based upon the experience we had while writing our ‘ …

Lightning talks at Percona Live Amsterdam: come on stage!

The schedule to Percona Live Europe 2016 is being finalized. It should be published soon, and it will include 3 hour and 6 hour tutorials, regular 50-minute talks, and shorter 25-minutes talks. It will not include, however, the lightning talks, a session comprising several 5-minute talks, and they are missing from the initial schedule for two reasons:

  • We want to offer a chance to all attendees to propose a lightning talk for some time. We would like to have more quality material to choose from.
  • They will not be in the conference venue. Instead, they will be hosted at Booking, during the community dinner.

Unlike in previous editions, though, the lightning talks will …

Docker Images for MySQL Group Replication 5.7.14

In this post, I will point you to Docker images for MySQL Group Replication testing.

There is a new release of MySQL Group Replication plugin for MySQL 5.7.14. It’s a “beta” plugin and it is probably the last (or at lease one of the final pre-release packages) before Group Replication goes GA (during Oracle OpenWorld 2016, in our best guess).

Since it is close to GA, it would be great to get a better understanding of this new technology. Unfortunately, MySQL Group Replication installation process isn’t very user-friendly.

Or, to put it another way, totally un-user-friendly! It consists of a mere “50 easy steps” – by which I think they mean “easy” to mess up.

MyQuery 3.5.6 released

I released version 3.5.6 of MyQuery, and there are quite a number of new features and fixes in there. The #1 bugfix is that the annoying access warnings that poped up from Windows when saving to the registry are gone, as I have now moved the registry to a more Windows 10 acceptable place. Among the new features are:

  • JSON format output when saving results.
  • More flexible CSV format output with many new options.
  • Ability to save Dyncol as JSON in CSV and JSON output.
  • Nicer formatting of numbers in status dialogs.
  • Auto refresh of status dialogs

As this is a version with many new features, I still consider this a Beta. I have built it on Windows 10 and tested it on Windows 10 and 7, 64-bit, although MyQuery itself is still a 32-bit windows application.

Happy SQL'ing

MySQL Failover Design Considerations

This will be a multi-part series covering various areas of failover for MySQL.  This first installment will primarily look at some design considerations, which you can then apply to your own environment in your own way.  The concepts presented here are merely suggestions and not out-right “how-to”.   Every company has specific technologies or skill-sets in… Read More »

Working Around MySQL Cluster Push Down Limitations Using Subqueries

I worked on an issue last recently where a query was too slow when executed in MySQL Cluster. The issue was that Cluster has some restrictions when it comes to push down conditions.

As an example of this, consider the following query using the employees sample database. The query takes a look at the average salary based on how many years the employee has been with the company. As the latest hire date in the database is in January 2000, the query uses 1 February 2000 as the reference date.

Initially the query performs like (performance is with two data nodes and all nodes in the same virtual machine on a laptop, so the timings are not necessarily representative of a production system, though the improvements should be repeatable):

mysql> SELECT FLOOR(DATEDIFF('2000-02-01', hire_date)/365) AS LengthOfService,
              COUNT(DISTINCT employees.emp_no) AS NoEmployees, AVG(salary) AS AvgSalary
         FROM salaries …

Percona XtraDB Cluster on Ceph

This post discusses how XtraDB Cluster and Ceph are a good match, and how their combination allows for faster SST and a smaller disk footprint.

My last post was an introduction to Red Hat’s Ceph. As interesting and useful as it was, it wasn’t a practical example. Like most of the readers, I learn about and see the possibilities of technologies by burning my fingers on them. This post dives into a real and novel Ceph use case: handling of the Percona XtraDB Cluster SST operation using Ceph snapshots.

If you are familiar with Percona XtraDB Cluster, you know that a full state snapshot transfer (SST) is required to provision a new cluster node. Similarly, SST can also be triggered when a cluster node happens to have a corrupted …
