Do you want to install MySQL 8.0 on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS? In this quick tutorial, I show you exactly how to do it in five minutes or less.

This tutorial assumes you don’t have MySQL or MariaDB installed. If you do, it’s necessary to uninstall them or follow a slightly more complicated upgrade process (not covered here).

Step 1: Install MySQL APT Repository

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, also known as Xenial, comes with a choice of MySQL 5.7 and MariaDB 10.0.

If you want to use MySQL 8.0, you need to install the MySQL/Oracle Apt repository first:

This post is following previously published OLTP_RO results for MySQL 8.0 ( latin1 and utf8mb4 charsets), and now is focusing on Sysbench RW workloads, particularly "mixed" OLTP_RW and Update-NoKey :

• OLTP_RW : while this workload has writes, it's mainly driven by reads (OLTP_RO + 2 updates + delete + insert)
• Update-NoKey : aggressively bombarding UPDATE queries (but with no changes on indexed columns)

Recently I worked on one customer issue that I would describe as “slave performance too slow”. During a quick analysis, I’ve found that the replication slave SQL thread cannot keep up while processing row-based events from the master’s binary log.

Earlier this year, I was presented with the challenge of streamlining user access to MySQL, allowing users self-serve access using their LDAP credentials, while logging all access. Of course, various MySQL forks allow for user auditing, but the solution is also needed to eventually support other data storage systems without native user auditing. This gave me the opportunity to do a trial integration of MySQL, Vault, ProxySQL, and LDAP; Vault would be used to dynamically create user accounts, and ProxySQL would be used to limit access and log activity. To evaluate the functionality and configuration of the integration, I used Docker to set up a test environment.
