For a few years, I've tried to recap here some events I've found notable over the past year and offering some guesses on what might be ahead of us. Phew, here we go, this blog post has been long time coming! A few months ago I started toying around with the idea of analyzing the PlanetMySQL public blog feed. It doesn’t take long to extract the data and prepare it for analysis but between lots of work and procrastination this blog post was left unfinished.

Brief pause of that Sudoku series :  I’m working on my object-relational mapping framework code-named Eth.

It’s vaguely similar to Glorp but much simpler and not as intelligent as Glorp.  This time, the resurrection of my framework is more like… a rewrite from scratch.  It all started on VAST, then I ported it to Dolphin then Squeak and now Pharo.  Hopefully, now I will spend more time writing it than porting it! Also, it will exclusively support Pharo.  I also decided to write some SUnit tests to make sure I can properly handle PostgreSQL, MySQL and Interbase for the first version.  But I am also planning on supporting SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, Access and Firebird.  Eventually!

The Bank of Finland (BoF) acts as Finland's central bank, national monetary authority, and member of the European System of Central Banks and the Eurosystem.

The BoF developed a MySQL based versatile system for making payments and settlement simulations, used for analyzing liquidity needs, risk issues, changes in authority policies & regulations, and more. Running on Windows, the application has been widely adopted by central bank economists worldwide.

The Simulator is managing large data sets and thus needed a robust database as its foundation. Key requirements to select the database included:
