New MySQL Enterprise Oracle Certifications

As mentioned in my summary of MySQL announcements at Oracle OpenWorld, we announced last Monday new MySQL Enterprise Certifications with Oracle Secure Backup and with a number of offerings within the Oracle Fusion Middleware product family.

Many Oracle customers use MySQL for their web-based, departmental and embedded applications. The MySQL Enterprise Oracle certifications make it faster and easier for them to deploy and manage MySQL within their existing environment.

Certified integrations between MySQL and other Oracle products include:

Oracle's NoSQL

Oracle's turn-about announcement of a NoSQL product wasn't really surprising. When Oracle spends time and effort putting down a technology, you can bet that its secretly impressed, and trying to re-implement it in its back room. So Oracle's paper "Debunking the NoSQL Hype" should really have been read as a backhanded product announcement. (By the way, don't click that link; the paper appears to have been taken down. Surprise.)

I have to agree with DataStax and other developers in the NoSQL movement: Oracle's announcement is a …

Got open source cloud storage? Red Hat buys Gluster

Red Hat’s $136m acquisition of open source storage vendor Gluster marks Red Hat’s biggest buy since JBoss and starts the fourth quarter with a very intersting deal. The acquisition is definitely good for Red Hat since it bolsters its Cloud Forms IaaS and OpenShift PaaS technology and strategy with storage, which is often the starting point for enterprise and service provider cloud computing deployments. The acquisition also gives Red Hat another weapon in its fight against VMware, Microsoft and others, including OpenStack, of which Gluster is a member (more on that further down). The deal is also good for Gluster given the sizeable price Red Hat is paying for the provider of open source, software-based, scale-out storage for unstructured data and also as validation of both open source and software in today’s IT and cloud computing storage.

Challenges of Big Databases with MySQL

Many database management tasks become difficult as you move from millions of rows and gigabytes of data to billions of rows and terabytes of data. Such tasks include ingesting data while maintaining indexes; changing schemas without downtime; and supporting connections, replication, and backup. For some scaling problems (connections and replication), MySQL is better than most of the competition. For others, such as indexing, schema changes, and backup, MySQL has typically been harder to use. Fortunately, the tasks MySQL does well are in its core, whereas the tasks that are more difficult can be solved with storage engine plug-ins.

This presentation discusses how MySQL’s storage engines have recently made dramatic progress in large database …
