2010 UC Cert Wrap-up

The 2010 MySQL is over but many have left with certifications among their souvenirs. 150 exams were given this year and we now have three new Associates, two new cluster DBAs, two new 5.1 DBAs, twelve new developers, and thirty-eight new 5.0 DBAs! Some folks walked away with two or three new certifications. Those were just the folks who tested this year and does not count those who finished up a 5.0 DBA or 5.0 Developer cert at the UC!

Thank you to all who took exams this year. It takes a few days for the exam data to peculate into the Sun Certification Database but your certification kits will be posted ASAP.

A big thank you to Carey Hardey and Shankar Kondur who ran certifications this year. An Oracle travel ban kept me from attending this year and Carey, from the Oracle University Certification Department volunteered to travel down the treacherous Highway 101 to oversee the exams. Shankar is from …

The other Oracle ACE Director

While the choice of Ronald Bradford and Sheeri Cabral were natural for Oracle ACE Director my own nomination was perhaps a bit of a surprise. Well, it was to me anyway.

Those of you at the conference may have noticed that I had no (super-cool) ACE Director jacket when I was called up on the stage...

Well that was because the jacket was too big, and I had already returned it to Lenz for it to be exchanged.

Unfortunately I can't return the shoes because they are too big for me as well...

MySQL 5.5 – A Community Winner

Ever since MySQL 5.5 beta has been announced by Edward Screven, Oracle’s chief corporate architect; there is lot of positive buzz (here, here, …) about the performance and scalability improvements added in this release. We should all be thankful to Michael Ronstrom (as most of the key developers are already working on different forks), who [...]

RAID Controllers Cache Management – Missing Features

We all know how important hardware RAID controllers are in today’s data storage performance especially when dealing with large data sets. If we look at the trend from now to couple of years back; they really evolved rapidly with lot of useful features and their usage also grown as most of the new servers [...]

Why start a new database company in 2010?

We were honored to give a closing keynote talk at MySQL Conference & Expo 2010, and wanted to share the video with you. Why start a new database company? What is RethinkDB all about? What will database technology look like twenty years from now? In this talk we explore these questions, present some of the exciting technology we've been developing at RethinkDB, and show how it fits into our larger vision of what database systems may look like in the future.

MySQL Conference, 2010 - Days 3 and 4

Ok so I got a bit behind on updating my blog because I was so busy actually enjoying the conference. The last two days were also quite good with the most informative talk, at least for me, being the talk on PCI and MySQL. That comes up somewhat frequently at work and it was nice to see that most of my assumptions were correct. I also learned a few things about PCI and how to apply it that I did not know.

The talk on NoSQL was also pretty good. Honestly I have not made up my mind about NoSQL but I have realized one side does not (nor really ever did) fit all. Some applications just need a relational database. Others might not. Still others can be happy with both. Because relational databases can give you consistency and referential integrity. You add in constraints and it becomes an elegant solution since it is near impossible (with proper design) to end up with referential inconsistency. Not everyone needs that for all parts of the …

Post-Conference Roundup of InnoDB-related Info

What a busy week! Lots of MySQL 5.5 announcements that just happened to coincide with the MySQL Conference and Expo in Silicon Valley. Here are some highlights of the performance and scalability work that the InnoDB team was involved with.

A good prep for the week of news is the article Introduction to MySQL 5.5, which includes information about the major performance and scalability features. That article will lead you into the MySQL 5.5 manual for general features and the InnoDB 1.1 manual for performance & scalability info.

Then there were the conference presentations from InnoDB team members, which continued the twin themes of performance and scalability:
