Oracle’s customers tend to be large enterprises running apps like e-business suite. These are certified to run on Oracle, and further they sit close to finance. MySQL […]

The call for participation for Percona Live MySQL Conference 2014 is still open. As part of the review committee, I will be looking at the proposals, and I hope to see many interesting ones.
There is a novelty in the submission form. In addition to tutorials and regular sessions, now you can submit proposals for lightning talks, to which I am particularly interested, as I have organized the lightning talks in the past two editions, and I am in charge to continue the tradition for the next one.
If you want to be a speaker at the conference, here are some tips to get your proposal accepted:
- Propose a topic that you know well;
- Take some time to write a well thought and meaningful proposal: nothing gets me faster to the rejection button than statements like “I want to talk about X, I will …

November 4, 2013 By Severalnines Percona Live London MySQL Conference - 11-12th November, 2013
We’re particularly excited about this year’s Percona Live London MySQL Conference. The line-up of speakers & topics looks excellent and it’s good to see speakers from Oracle, Percona, the MariaDB Foundation (amongst others) scheduled at the same event. It demonstrates not just the diversity of the ever broadening MySQL ecosystem, but also the fact that there really is room for everyone to contribute, participate in and advance MySQL in manifold directions while still retaining a certain amount of uniformity.
And this is how we will be contributing to the event ...

[Read more]Emphasis on clustering solutions comes up quite a lot when talking to customers about High Availability. The reason is because clustering is supposed to provide an easier solution for maintaining high availability and so that you do not have to rely on other tools and techniques outside of the database server. I thought it would be good to share the gist of many of my discussions around clustering, in the form of a blog post. So here I will be doing a high-level comparison between MySQL NDB Cluster and Percona XtraDB Cluster.

I’ll be in Hong Kong for the upcoming OpenStack Summit Nov 5-8. I’d be thrilled to talk database things with others present, especially around Trove DBaaS (DataBase as a Service) and high availability MySQL for OpenStack deployments.
I was last in Hong Kong in 2010 when I worked for Rackspace. The closest office to me was in Hong Kong so that’s where I did my HR onboarding training. I remember telling friends on the Sunday night before leaving for Hong Kong that I may be able to make dinner later in the week purely depending on if somebody got back to me on if I was going to Hong Kong that week. I was, and I went. I took some photos while there.
Walking from the hotel where we were staying to the Rackspace office could be done pretty much entirely through buildings without going outside. There were bits of art around too, which is just kind of awesome – I’m …
[Read more]Over a year ago now, I announced the first Percona Server 5.6 alpha on the Percona MySQL Performance Blog (Announcing Percona Server 5.6 Alpha). That was way back on August 14th, 2012 and it was based on MySQL 5.6.5 released in April.
I’m really happy now to point to the release of the first GA release of Percona Server 5.6 along with some …
[Read more]It’s getting close to time to head to Auckland for OSDC and a few days ago I blogged about how I’m speaking there). I’ll be speaking on MySQL In the Cloud, As A Service and all of the challenges that can entail as well as on The Agony and Ecstasy of Continuous Integration. Both of these talks draw heavily on the experience of Percona (my employer) and with experience from helping customers with all sorts of MySQL deployments and in our experience in producing our own high quality software.
I was in Auckland earlier this year, so thought I’d share some pictures of the wonderful city in which OSDC is being held.
Firstly, New Zealand has some pretty awesome wildlife. This is …
