Scaling TokuDB Performance with Binlog Group Commit

TokuDB offers high throughput for write intensive applications, and the throughput scales with the number of concurrent clients.  However, when the binary log is turned on, TokuDB 7.5.2 throughput suffers.  The throughput scaling problem is caused by a poor interaction between the binary log group commit algorithm in MySQL 5.6 and the way TokuDB commits transactions.   TokuDB 7.5.4 for Percona Server 5.6 fixes this problem, and the result is roughly an order of magnitude increase in SysBench throughput for in memory workloads.

I spent the last 4 years at SkySQL/MariaDB working on versions of MySQL that could be “suitable for the cloud”. I strongly believed that the world needed a version of MySQL that could work in the cloud even better than its comparable version on bare metal. Users and administrators wanted to benefit from the use of cloud infrastructures and at the same time they wanted to achieve the same performance and overall stability of their installations on bare metal. Unfortunately, ACID-compliant databases in the cloud suffer from the issues that any centrally controlled and strictly persistent system can get when hosted on highly distributed and natively stateless infrastructures.

Benchmark of Load Balancers for MySQL/MariaDB Galera Cluster

When running a MariaDB Cluster or Percona XtraDB Cluster, it is common to use a load balancer to distribute client requests across multiple database nodes. Load balancing SQL requests aims to optimize the usage of the database nodes, maximize throughput, minimize response times and avoid overload of the Galera nodes. 

In this blog post, we’ll take a look at four different open source load balancers, and do a quick benchmark to compare performance:

  • HAproxy by HAproxy Technologies
  • IPVS by Linux Virtual Server Project

How to start Percona Xtradb Cluster on CentOS 7

Normally, when we want to start PXC (Percona XtraDB Cluster) on RHEL/CentOS 6 or older then that, we can simply start with init.d script or service command. i.e

shell> /etc/init.d/mysql start 
OR 
shell> /etc/init.d/mysql bootstrap-pxc
shell> service mysql start.

But, the way is changed from CentOS 7. Because systemd integration with RHEL/CentOS 7 is now available for Percona XtraDB Cluster (#1342223).

So now, we have to start mysql with systemctl command i.e

shell> systemctl start mysql

For boostrap,

shell> systemctl start mysql@bootstrap.service

We are excited to announce the availability of YUM/APT repositories for ClusterControl, making new releases of ClusterControl  easily accessible using YUM or APT package managers. The repo is found at http://repo.severalnines.com, with instructions provided on the landing page. Our Cluster Configurators will be using these repositories. As a result, users upgrading from s9s_upgrade_cmon starting from version v.1.2.8 will be configured with the package repository.
