Thanks to Expandrive . You can now use Subversion (SVN) on websites hosted at Mosso . The idea of mounting a directory you’d normally ftp/sftp to, and then using SVN on it, at first seemed oddly implausible to me. But, I tried it recently, and got exactly the results I wanted. I even had the repository hosted at Unfuddle . I think this post is fairly obvious, but if you have any questions feel free to ask in the comments.
Hi all,
When I'm not sitting in front of a computer for work, I find myself sitting in front of a computer when I'm not working. And usually I;m messing around with something that I shouldn't have started messing around with.
MediaWiki
I manage the alumni site for my former military unit. I started the site in 2000, and it has grown tremendously to include 250 registered alumni. Not bad, eh? I'm constantly looking for ways to improve the site. I've had a guestbook and message board since the beginning, and I've also experimented with live chat (which wasn't so popular). I work a lot of hours for Sun, and it has become increasingly difficult to keep the site updated, especially the contact information for the 250 alumni. So I had what I thought was a brilliant idea: I'll create a wiki where members can keep their own contact information updated. I was a lot of work, but I finally got it up and running. This is what …
[Read more]I had the opportunity to review a client’s production Drupal installation recently. This is a new site and traffic is just starting to pick up. Drupal is a popular LAMP stack open source CMS system using the MySQL Database.
Unfortunately I don’t always have the chance to focus on one product when consulting, sometimes the time can be minutes to a few hours. Some observations from looking at Drupal.
Disk footprint
Presently, volume and content is of a low volume, but expecting to ramp up. I do however find 90% of disk volume in one table called ‘watchdog’;
+--------------+--------------+--------------+-------------+--------+ | table_schema | total_mb | data_mb | index_mb | tables | +--------------+--------------+--------------+-------------+--------+ | xxxxx | 812.95555878 | …[Read more]
Sorry for the downtime of this site - until around a week ago I hosted my home page on a trusty Genesi Pegasos II system (powered by a PowerPC G4 Processor clocked at 1GHz, using Debian 4.0 PPC with 512 MB of RAM), serving these pages from my home DSL connection. Unfortunately this system provided no means of redundancy - the hard disk drive died.
Luckily I perform frequent backups, so I moved most parts of the site to a shared hosting space now - the picture gallery is unfortunately too big to fit into the space that I have there. I'll try to move the pictures into my Flickr account instead, but this will take some time.
Note that the primary domain name of this site is now lenzg.net - lenzg.org, (the …

My last post was for all users, technical and
non. This post is for the techies who know me, and are switching.
Some are coming from Windows, some from Linux, some are designers
who need to do some local development. So, I’ll try to keep this
post as simple as possible, and perhaps more like a tutorial,
where you can “copy and paste” commands and files.
If you’re going to be doing any kind of web development, chances
are you’ll be deploying to a linux/unix server. I don’t know
anything about Windows or IIS, so ignore this post if you’re
looking for IIS help. I’m also assuming basic level of knowledge
with how to find and edit files either via Finder, or via
Terminal. For the non unix folks ~ for the rest of the
article, means “Your home directory” .
Your home directory is usually …
Yet Another Switch Page 2.0
It’s been 4 years since I switched to the Mac. A few years ago I made a page for other switchers. I’m making a new list, as a lot of my friends have finally switched themselves, or are thinking about it. Please share and add your favorite apps in the comments.
The List
Here is the software I use, in order of importance to myself.
- QuickSilver: If you don’t like using the mouse, this is your friend. It’s not just an app launcher, with the power of chaining, I can create tasks in RTM , straight to iCal, Calculator, and send quick emails with text snippets
- Terminal.App: This comes with OS X, and is still my prefered method of …
This video has been going around for some time now, but I think its worth the post for those that have yet to see it.
Video Source: The Web Site is Down
Mozilla, the global community behind the Firefox web browser, has an idea that we need your help with. We want you to help make openness, participation and distributed decision-making common experiences in Internet life.
To do this, millions of people around the world must understand, embrace and share these values. You, me, our families, our neighbor down the street, our political representatives – millions of us from every walk of life in every wired country can help to protect the Net and make it better.
As an experiment working towards this goal, I am coordinating a program that asks people to share short (very, very short – 3 to 12 second) video statements of how the Net has changed their life. We hope that thousands of videos are made by people all over the world and that, through …

“When I was a child, my mother lectured me on the evils of
‘gossip.’ She held a feather pillow and said, ‘If I tear this
open, the feathers will fly to the four winds, and I could never
get them back in the pillow. That’s how it is when you spread
mean things about people.’ For me, that pillow is a metaphor for
Wikipedia.” — John Seigenthaler Sr.
So the future pulled up in her shiny big metaphor and we got in. In the beginning, our road trip made sense, all well-ordered highways and wholesome roadside attractions. Somewhere along the way, we hit bat country and the …

There has been a recent uptake of Twitter amongst the MySQL community… Early adopters have been around for ages, even (as we’re slowly approaching Twitter’s third birthday).
However, I’ve been noticing that slowly, …
