MySQL Streaming Xtrabackup to Slave Recovery

Overview

There are times when I need to restore a slave from a backup of a master or another slave, but too many times I have taken the typical approach of taking the backup on the source server and then copying it to the target server.  This takes a great deal of time, especially as your database grows in size.

These steps are going to detail how to use Netcat (nc) and Percona Xtrabackup (innobackupexec) to stream the backup from the source server to the target server, saving a great deal of time by copying the data only once to the desired location.  While the data is streaming to the target server, it’s being compressed and then uncompressed on the fly, reducing the amount of traffic going across the network by around 85% to 90% (typical backup compression ratios of MySQL Innodb I have witnessed are in this range).  I will also provide a simple script to complete these steps to give you a start at creating your …

Backing up your MySQL instance physically with Docker

In a previous post I had mentioned that I was doing a bit of digging into Docker in order to get a better grasp of the technology. Part of that was exploring common administrative tasks. I would venture to say that backups are probably among the most important tasks we take on with database administration, so it’s important to know how to do this for Docker MySQL instances.

There is a fair bit of documentation on how to handle this logically (mysqldump / mydumper) as this is a simple task to perform as long as you can connect to the database instance, so I wanted to approach physical backups using the very common xtrabackup tool. Additionally, we’re trying to think with containers here, so I wanted to make sure that not only would I be taking a backup of the Docker container MySQL instance, but I would do it with another Docker container running …

Backing up users and privileges in MySQL

There are two simple ways to backup only the users and privileges in MySQL:

1- Using mysqlpump utility (as create user and grant statements):

[shell ~]$ mysqlpump -uUSER -p --exclude-databases=% --add-drop-user --users > /tmp/pump-all-users_privileges-timestamp.sql
Dump completed in 1364 milliseconds

Sample output:

[shell ~]$ head /tmp/pump-all-users_privileges-timestamp.sql

-- Dump created by MySQL pump utility, version: 5.7.21-20, Linux (x86_64)
-- Dump start time: Sun May 13 23:30:49 2018
-- Server version: 5.7.21

A critical piece is missing for Oracle MySQL 8 (GA) …

Oracle MySQL 8.0 has been declared GA but a critical piece is missing … MySQL 8 is a fantastic release embedding the work of brilliant Oracle engineering. I will not detail all the great features of MySQL 8 as there are a lot of great presentations around it. https://mysqlserverteam.com/whats-new-in-mysql-8-0-generally-available/ One of my main concern regarding ...continue reading "A critical piece is missing for Oracle MySQL 8 (GA) …"

Restore a table / database from full backup – Yet another way

Restore requests are common and so are the restores of specific entities: a database, or one or more table(s). This has been discussed a lot and we have plenty of tools and solutions already available.
In this blog post we will cover an interesting solution that I came across when I received a restoration request from a client with a specific scenario.

The scenario? Well, the client was on a Windows server with 400GB of mysqldump and wanted to restore a table.

As Linux players we already know of some tools and techniques to export a table or database from mysqldump – for example, using sed command or using the script mysqldumpsplitter (based on sed itself). But on Windows we are powerless by not being able to use sed (we’re sad without sed.) Also, there was no cygwin to ease up the pain.

We had to come-up with a solution that works on …

How to Restore MySQL Logical Backup at Maximum Speed

The ability to restore MySQL logical backups is a significant part of disaster recovery procedures. It’s a last line of defense.

Even if you lost all data from a production server, physical backups (data files snapshot created with an offline copy or with Percona XtraBackup) could show the same internal database structure corruption as in production data. Backups in a simple plain text format allow you to avoid such corruptions and migrate between database formats (e.g., during a software upgrade and downgrade), or even help with migration from completely different database solution.

Unfortunately, the restore speed for logical backups is usually bad, and for a big database it could require days …

Monitoring MySQL Backups With Datadog and TwinDB Backup Tool

Monitoring MySQL backups is a vital part of any reliable backup solution. By monitoring the most common disaster recovery metrics, the Recovery Time Objective and the Recovery Point Objective, you can find out if a backup job was successful and produced a usable backup copy. The TwinDB Backup Tool along with Datadog allows monitoring both […]
