[Read more]So I’ve been doing a fair number of automated load tests these past six months. Primarily with Sysbench, which is a fine, fine tool. First I started using some simple bash based loop controls to automate my overnight testing, but as usually happens with shell scripts they grew unwieldy and I rewrote them in python. Now I have some flexible and easily configurable code for sysbench based MySQL benchmarking to offer the community. I’ve always been a fan of giving back to such a helpful group of people – you’ll never hear me complain about “my time isn’t free”. So, let me know what you want in an ideal testing environment (from a load testing framework automation standpoint) and I’ll integrate it into my existing framework and then release it via the BSD license. The main goal here is to have a standardized modular framework, based on sysbench, that allows anyone to compare their server performance via repeatable tests. It’s fun to see …

[Read more]Linuxtag is likely one of the oldest and largest Linux/OSS events in Germany. I remember having been there to represent SuSE Linux while it still took place at the University of Kaiserslautern, using tables and chairs from the lecture rooms as exhibition stands (this must have been around 1998 or 1999). This year it will take place in Berlin again, and the session schedule looks very promising. I'll be there from Wednesday till Friday and I feel that I will have a hard time deciding which presentations I should attend...

I attended Vadim Tkachenko’s talk on XtraBackup during MySQL
conference in Santa Clara last week. Backups are obviously
very important, but the use case I had in mind is this:
Replicating a database that has Innodb tables in it, while
keeping both master and slave on line if possible.
Tangent: by the way, I love the native backup utility that was once promised in MySQL 6.0, similar to SQL Server’s way of backup. It was like running “BACKUP myDb to DISK = ‘/backupDirectory/myDb.bak'” under mysql client, but I digress…
I have used mysqldump to accomplish this in the past, but I
wondered how XtraBackup would fare in this task, especially after
hearing Vadim’s talk and reading news on Percona’s development
effort. To cut to the chase, this is my conclusion. Reproducing
steps are listed immediately afterwards.

Oracle announced on Friday that it is to discontinue its commercial interest in the OpenOffice.org project, prompting a barrage of criticism from the open source faithful with regards to its approach to the open source applications project, and community in general.
The company was accused of being community-hostile, for example, and comparisons were also made to Colonel Gadhafi, while a translation of the press release into “plain English” apparently shed new light on the announcement.
In truth though, the language …

The report examines the changing database landscape, investigating how the failure of existing suppliers to meet the performance, scalability and flexibility needs of large-scale data processing has led to the development and adoption of alternative data management technologies.
Specifically, the report covers:
