Mac OS X users can install MariaDB via Homebrew

The gist of it is, if you’ve installed Mac OS X and you use Homebrew, you’ll be pleased to note that you’re just a brew install away for getting a working MariaDB. Yes, that’s right, simply do: brew install mariadb and that’s it — you’ll have MariaDB (currently 5.2.6) installed in no time. For further documentation and a step-by-step guide, visit the Knowledgebase article: Building MariaDB on Mac OS X using Homebrew.

What happened to MySQL Forge?

Update
Soon after I posted this article, the Forge came back online! Thanks!

MySQL Forge has been offline for two days now. (2011-06-14) No sign of acknowledgement of this problem from the MySQL team. What is happening? For those not well acquainted with MySQL Forge, here are the facts. The MySQL Forge is a site that was intended to contain all community contributions. The reality did not follow the plans very closely, and some sections of the forge ended up with less contents than what should be useful. However, there are a few sections of the forge that are extremely useful to users:

  • The Wiki, which is full of irreplaceable documentation, such as the MySQL internals, description of preview features, slides and recordings of MySQL University, manual of many tools (such as the …

Percona.tv: State of the MySQL Ecosystem

In December I covered the topic The state of MySQL forks: co-operating without co-operating (which was also a response to Giuseppe Maxia's take on the same topic). Since half a year has now passed, I was wondering if I should follow up with an update. (Drizzle having a GA release would be the major news in such an update.)

But I see that Peter Zaitsev covered this topic in the opening keynote of their Percona Live conference. Since I agree with Peter's view on this topic, I just recommend you watch the talk on Percona.TV. He also uses the same categorizations of the forks, and includes "community patches" as its separate …

If you run Debian or Ubuntu, and want a way to auto-generate a sources.list entry, then you should definitely look at: Setting up Repositories for Ubuntu/Debian. Its very simple: choose a distribution, then a release, then choose what version of MariaDB you would like to track and a mirror of your choice, and voila! it generates the sources.list for you.

Why Oracle’s donation of OpenOffice disappoints

While Oracle deserves some praise for its donation of OpenOffice.org code to the Apache Foundation, it is disappointing again to see a legitimate open source market contender that has been marginalized by miscommunication and mismanagement of the project by a large vendor.

OpenOffice.org, warts and all, was probably the most significant competition for Microsoft Office for years and in many ways demonstrated the advantages of open source, helping usher in wider use of it, as well as greater usability. OO.o was in fact my reason for originally investigating and moving to open source software more than a decade ago. Regardless of past mismanagement of community and technology, that competitive factor has been diminished greatly since Oracle took ownership of OO.o. Now, after prompting a fork — as has …

LinuxTag 2011

Last week I was at LinuxTag in Berlin. It was a great event. This time it was my second year there. I really enjoyed the first year and so I did this time as well. I spoke to many people, learned new interesting stuff and my todo list got again somehow longer And I believe that I also showed some interesting stuff to the people at our booth. I was speaking about GNOME Shell to anybody who happened to be nearby and everybody liked it! Good work, GNOME guys!
I’m glad I was able to be there and I want to share few pictures from the event with you, so even if you couldn’t make it there, you’ll see at least a little bit of what we were doing. We had a lot of fun
