Reflections on MySQL conference - Part III: My own activities

To round off my memoirs from the MySQL conference 2011, I'll just write down for the historical record my own activities.

MySQL awards

With the community picking up tasks that used to be handled by MySQL AB, it somehow has fallen on my lap to drive the selection of winners for the annual MySQL awards. This was the second year we did it and we have settled on a format where the winners are chosen by a community panel consisting of 2 previous years winners, plus the conference chair(s). I think having the community nominating and voting the winners have brought forward some truly deserving and sometimes also surprising winners, and it has been a pleasure to be involved in this process. I feel privileged to be part of a process channeling so much goodwill and respect from the MySQL community to the winners.

This year's winners were already …

Reflections on MySQL conference - Part II: People and community

Friendly and without drama

That's a good way to summarize the MySQL conference 2011. Nobody acquired nobody. There were no volcanoes keeping men away from their wives, dads away from soon to be born babies. I had packed extra underwear just in case, but it wasn't needed.

Pewter for Tungsten - Thanks, MySQL community!
After the opening keynote at the MySQL Conference, there was the usual ceremony of the MySQL community awards. Since Oracle declined to continue in the MySQL AB tradition of awarding the contributions from the community, the community itself has taken over.
I was pleasantly surprised to find my name among the recipients, and even more about the prize awarded to my company's product, the Tungsten Replicator.
The surprise comes because we have been making noise about this product for only a few months, after we finalized our plans to split the company products between open source and enterprise. Apparently, it has been the right kind of noise, …

O'Reilly MySQL Conference Community Awards 2011: The winners are...

This year was the first year the public could nominate candidates for these awards. We got in many nominations and this really helped the panel to get an overview of everything that is noteworthy in the MySQL ecosystem right now. Thank you to everyone who participated by sending in nominations.

In the first category the panel received and debated over a dozen suggestions. There are so many great people in this community, it is easy to think of people who truly deserve to be awarded. There were however two persons who clearly stood out with a track record of years and years of broad and really key contributions to the MySQL community. These two persons also clearly stood out both in number of nominations and number of votes. Therefore, the...

MySQL Conference with Severalnines, Xtrabackup, Nokia and much to learn

It's now 2 hours until I depart for San Francisco and then Santa Clara for this year's MySQL Conference. Can't wait to meet everyone and to learn about cool new things (2 solutions for parallelizing replication, Drizzle, Xtrabackup...)

This year I am involved in two BoF sessions: Severalnines ClusterControl with Johan Anderson and Xtrabackup Manager with Lachlan Mulcahy. Both of these are about brand new topics, this being the first time they are presented, so I'm excited to be working with these guys.

Make your voice heard. Tell Oracle and the MySQL Council what bugs you

The MySQL Council has not being idle. We have addressed the bugs database concerns, and we are continuing our dialog.
To do a better job, we would like to hear more from the community. Unlike other established user groups, MySQL does not have a world wide organization for its users. The council exists on a voluntary basis, and we are seeking support from the rest of you. Please let your voice heard. There are three main channels for this:

  • A MySQL Council survey
  • A set of questions that will be answered during the keynote at the MySQL Conference
  • Talk to a council member

SurveyThe …

Q&A with Monty by PacktPub

Monty just got interviewed by Packt Publishing in a Q&A format. There’s no way to comment on that article, so I’m wondering if you have any feedback — drop it here.

Also decided to start collecting interviews related to MariaDB on the Knowledgebase. Remember that its open for all to edit, so sign up.

Adios Lenz!

Longtime MySQL-er Lenz Grimmer

Lenz Grimmer

is leaving the MySQL side of the business to work in the Linux and Virtualization side of the Oracle business. He came from SuSE Linux and has retained interest in that area all the many years he helped make MySQL into the ubiquitous tool that it is. Lenz’s list of accomplishments is too long to note here and working with him on the MySQL Community Team has been a tremendous pleasure. He is not dropping off the face of the earth and will presenting at Collaborate 11 .

Please join me in wishing all the best for Lenz!

Friendly reminder: Nominate your candidate for MySQL awards by end of this week

This is just a friendly reminder that you can nominate your favorite MySQL community member, application and company for the traditional awards. The nominations must be in by the end of this week, after which the panel votes on them:

http://openlife.cc/blogs/2011/march/call-nominations-2011-oreilly-mysql-...

I've seen at least a few people on IRC that were thinking of sending in nominations, now is a good time to do it!

The address is mysql.awards@gmail.com
