Quick distribution update: openSUSE, Gentoo

If you’re on openSUSE, you definitely want to upgrade to the latest MariaDB release made on 19/07/2011. Previous security fix disabled XtraDB! This is MariaDB 5.1.55.

If you’re using Gentoo, please test MariaDB 5.2 ebuilds in the MySQL overlay. Its current with MariaDB 5.2.7 as well as MariaDB 5.1.55.

The open card in the mobile game

I wrote last year about the way Google’s Android mobile operating system was serving as a more open alternative to Apple’s iOS, but not so open that it didn’t leave opportunity for an even more open alternative.

Given that we continue to see software patent-based attacks on Android, as well as swirling FUD around coverage of the attacks and never ending suits and settlements and courtroom developments, it is clear it will be a long time before any of this legal business is ever close to settled, unless ended by settlements first, which is likely.

However, I’m more interested in the technology in the meantime. I also think it’s interesting to see, if not a ‘more open’ …

MySQL community counseling: Talking about your feelings

Last week Monty Taylor wrote an interesting blog post Oracle do not, in fact, comprise the total set of MySQL Experts where he protested against the title of Oracle's new podcast series Meet The MySQL Experts. Now, when I say "interesting" I'm not really referring to the factual argument he is making...

What was interesting about this was to see Monty burst out like that and express some true human feelings. Through all the controversies we've seen around MySQL, the Drizzle team has made a point of staying out of such discussions and just working on cleaning up their code and adding cool new stuff (added as plugins, of course). And if anything, I would have expected it to be someone like Stewart to finally break and start ranting about something, if it were to happen...

Just to …

New “Meet The MySQL Experts” Podcast Series

During the past year, we’ve put a lot of emphasis at Oracle on sharing information with the MySQL Community. Actions included PR and communications not only about GA products but also about development milestone releases and features available in labs.mysql.com, as well as more technical articles, more blogs, participation to conferences…etc. We very much value the feedback and discussions such communications generate.

We therefore plan to keep communicating this way, and do even more. This is why we’re now very pleased to announce a new Oracle podcast series entitled “Meet the MySQL Experts”! We plan to, once a month, interview an Oracle MySQL Engineer who will share information about his/her domain expertise, and what he/she is currently working on.

For the first edition, it was my …

Trocha otevřenosti od SOZA

Picture taken from http://www.kopfnote.net/ under the terms of CC-BY-NC-SA

Introducing the Tungsten-toolbox
After the public home for Tungsten Replicator, we needed another place where to host complementary tools. We discussed the pros and cons of hosting these tools in the same place where we publish Tungsten, but in the end we decided that it's more practical to have a separate project, where we can publish tools related to database replication, no matter if they are dedicated to Tungsten or if they can work with other replication systems. So, here it is. We have now Tungsten Toolbox, a site where we will collect our tools and accept contributions from others.

We have already a few tools that, after being cleaned up, will …

Oracle at fisl12 (Porto Alegre, Brazil, 2011-06-29/2011-07-02)

fisl12 is likely the largest free and open source software event in Latin America. This year, it takes place in Porto Alegre, Brazil, from June 29th to July 2nd. Oracle is a gold sponsor of the event and I will attend it as a speaker. I feel honoured and excited to be there – for me it will be the first visit to the South American continent.

They already have over 3000 registered attendees, so this definitely is going to be a great conference. There is quite a number of well-known names on the speaker roster and I look forward to meeting a lot of familar faces there.

The agenda is still under development but quite impressive already – …
