The latest from the MySQL community

We've had problems with recordings lately, so the video streams (slides & audio) for these sessions were missing, or incomplete:

I'm happy to say that Dimdim (our conferencing system provider) was able to restore the files, so if you've missed either of those sessions, go ahead and look at the video stream!

This Thursday (June 25th, 13:00 UTC), Lenz Grimmer will explain how to contribute code to MySQL, in a MySQL University session titled MySQL Code Contributions. Lenz is a member of the MySQL Community Team. His session will give an overview about how code contributions to MySQL should be handled and performed. It will cover the ideal workflow, requirements and available infrastructure and toolchain that potential contributors should be aware of.

For MySQL University sessions, point your browser to this page. You need a browser with a working Flash plugin. You may register for a Dimdim account, but you don't have to. (Dimdim is the conferencing system we're using for MySQL …

We’re sponsoring an important webinar series along with Sun/MySQL starting this week on June 25th – The Kimball Group Data Warehousing Educational Webinar Series.  This webinar series will introduce the audience to data warehousing concepts and best practices, and will cover the history and evolution of data warehousing, provide an overview of dimensional modeling, and review the full life cycle of designing and implementing a data warehouse.  Part 1, on June 25th at 1:00P PDT, is on Data Warehousing Fundamentals.

There are two key reasons why we think this webinar series is important:

• First, we believe this webinar further advances data warehousing in the MySQL world. There is a whole new generation of database developers in the MySQL community that are at various stages of understanding data warehousing – …

There has been a significant increase in interest in the Memcached, the open source distributed memory object-caching system, in recent months, as a number of vendors look to exploit its popularity in Web 2.0 and social networking environments.

Like Hadoop, which has become the focus of a number of commercial plays, it would appear that the time is right for commercialization of Memcached. But what is it, here did it come from, and what are the chances for vendors to rake in serious cash? Here are the details.

What is it?
Pronounced mem-cash-dee, Memcached was originally created by Danga Interactive (the developer of LiveJournal, which was acquired by Six Apart in 2005) to speed up the performance of dynamic Web applications by alleviating database load. Memcached has become an industry standard for improving the performance of dynamic websites.

The code is available from the …

In an earlier post, the pursuit of openness, I announced that MySQL is working at a new release model.

There are still a few details to sort out, but the general plan is ready. The new release model has been approved and starts to operate immediately.

The basic principles of this model are:

• The trunk is always at least in beta quality.
• A milestone starts in beta quality ( never in alpha) with a merge between the trunk and a stage tree;
• Milestone releases, with RC quality, released every three to six months.
• Integration windows between milestones allow the insertion of new features from stage trees
• GA releases happen every 12 to 18 months;
• There are not more than two releases in active …
