I’m very proud to share with you a few things: Sheeri K. Cabral, Nick Westerlund, Paul Vallée, Peter Ling, and I (Augusto Bott) will be in Santa Clara, CA for the MySQL Conference and Expo, MySQL Camp, and the Percona Performance Conference, next week.

Nick and I will be presenting a session called Proactive Operational Measures on the Percona Conference, and another session called 8 Rules for Designing More Secure Applications at the MySQL Camp.

I wrote previously about what I’m looking forward to at the upcoming MySQL Conference (next week!). Now I want to write about the free, community-organized unconference being held concurrently, MySQL Camp 2009.

It runs from Sunday through Thursday of next week, which is even longer than the MySQL conference. It starts Sunday with a day of games, then there are really good sessions throughout the week. In fact, I daresay the schedule is at times more interesting than the main MySQL conference:

• Hackfest with Mark Callaghan.
• Ask a guru. Free advice from really expensive consultants!
• Presentations from “big name” speakers, such as the BigDBAHead pair, Jeremy Zawodny, and people from Percona.
• Predicting Performance …

I haven’t really decided my schedule yet during the conference, but I thought I’d mention these sessions that look interesting to me.

I’m presenting a session on how to use Maatkit, which I think attendees will get a lot of benefit from.

• Tuesday
  • This is Not a Web App: The Evolution of a MySQL Deployment at Google (keynote). Mark Callaghan, need I say more?
  • MySQL and Search at Craigslist. Jeremy has gotten back into technical work after a career at Yahoo! that seemed to lead him away from his heart’s desire. I’d like to hear about the things he’s done, especially since I understand it involves replacing a lot of overloaded MySQL machines with a few underloaded Sphinx machines.

Here is a list of talks at the MySQL user conference that focus on new and upcoming features in MySQL. Percona presented two talks at PHP Quebec last week - one on A Tour of MySQL High Availability, and another on Performance Tuning MySQL. There was a great reaction to showcasing some of the quick-wins that can be found by using the Percona patches. Unfortunately, the one thing that I forgot to mention in the slides is that the patches are Open Source and free to use.

Even though we haven't yet gotten a schedule online, we're still accepting proposals for the Percona Performance Conference.

As a teaser, let me just share one accepted proposal with you: Cary Millsap. If you are even vaguely involved with Oracle, you should know who he is. He is one of the world's foremost authorities on Oracle performance. Cary will be giving a technology-agnostic session on Performance Instrumentation Beyond What You Do Now. Don't miss this one.

• T-Dose 2009 will be held on 3 and 4 october in Eindhoven again.

  Last year we had a nice Drupal track, some great MySQL talks and , a great unplanned Cloud talk , and different other interesting talks, so this year promises also to be very interesting.
  (PS. Drupal Themers.. you might want to propose a new theme for the T-Dose site, who knows you'll even win something)

• For the first time , 2009 will be the year that Belgium will have it's own Security Conference, BruCon has just announced Christofer Hoff as a KeyNote speaker , BruCon will take place on 18 and 19 september... obviously in Brussels ;)

I just returned from a MySQL Federal Migration Boot Camp, jointly presented by Carahsoft and Sun/MySQL. It was a half-day seminar on the topic of migrating applications to MySQL, targeted to the US Government sector. Specifically, most of the audience seemed to be running Oracle, though there were some users of other systems (Microsoft SQL Server, Sybase, Informix, etc).

Ronald Bradford presented the whole thing. I thought he did a great job giving a fair and balanced look at topics such as what types of applications are good candidates for migration, what gotchas you might encounter, etc. I’m sure someone looking at migrating in earnest would benefit from a whole day’s discussion (or a more focused engagement with a consultant), but I thought it was a great way to help people figure out whether …
