InnoDB I_S.tables.table_rows out by a factor of 100x

I’ve always believed that the MySQL Information_schema.tables.table_rows figure for Innodb tables to be while approximate, approximately accurate.

Today I found that the figures varied on one table from 10x to 100x wrong.

Before performing an ALTER I always verify sizes for reference.

mysql> alter table s_a modify col VARCHAR(255);

A script snippet to relative-ize numbers embedded in text

A lot of times I’m looking at several time-series samples of numbers embedded in free-form text, and I want to know how the numbers change over time. For example, two samples of SHOW INNODB STATUS piped through grep wait might contain the following:

Mutex spin waits 0, rounds 143359179688, OS waits 634106844
RW-shared spins 1224152309, OS waits 38278807; RW-excl spins 2432166425, OS waits 35264871
Mutex spin waits 0, rounds 143386303439, OS waits 634292093
RW-shared spins 1224197048, OS waits 38281423; RW-excl spins 2432347936, OS waits 35271423

How much have the numbers changed in the second sample? My head is too lazy to do that math. So Daniel Nichter and I whipped up Yet Another Snippet to self-discover patterns of text and numbers, and compare each line against the previous line that matches the same pattern. Let’s fetch it:

MySQL 5.1 and InnoDB Hot Backup Gotcha

Recently while we were building a slave with a newer version of MySQL 5.1 from an InnoDB Hot backup, the following error occurred when we ran mysql_upgrade:

mysql.time_zone OK
mysql.time_zone_leap_second OK
mysql.time_zone_name OK
mysql.time_zone_transition OK
mysql.time_zone_transition_type OK
mysql.user OK
Running 'mysql_fix_privilege_tables'...
ERROR 13 (HY000) at line 311: Can't get stat of './mysql/general_log.CSV' (Errcode: 2)
ERROR 13 (HY000) at line 316: Can't get stat of './mysql/slow_log.CSV' (Errcode: 2)
FATAL ERROR: Upgrade failed

The problem is that in MySQL 5.1, it is possible to log the slow query log and general log to tables in the mysql schema (source: Selecting General Query and Slow Query Log Output Destinations). These tables are …

Innodb performance gotcha w Larger queries.

Couple of days ago I was looking for a way to improve update performance for the application and I was replacing single value UPDATE with multiple value REPLACE (though I also saw the same problem with INSERT ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE)

As I went from 1 value to 3 or 10 in the batch performance improved, especially for network tests, however going to batches of 100 and 1000 values performance started to degrade badly - the process which was taking 45 seconds with single value statements was taking over 12 minutes with 1000 values in a batch. This was a big surprise for me as I've used batching with great performance gains a lot of times.

I had 2 thoughts - either something is going on with parser or it is something nasty going on on Innodb level, so I tried running the test with MyISAM tables instead. The process completed in 12 seconds for 1000 rows in a batch vs 40 …

plugin and 5.1

You can check it yourself – 5.1 seems to be shipped with InnoDB plugin in future :-) (oh the joy of open source repositories, always ready to spoil the surprise, eh?:)

PBMS version 0.5.09 has been released.

A new release of the PrimeBase Media Streaming engine is now available for download at
http://www.blobstreaming.org .

The main focus of this release was to provide the features required to make PBMS production ready and with the addition of transaction support and engine level backup I think it is almost there. The engine does not yet provide engine level replication but it will in a future release.

What's new:

  • PBMS now provides two methods to backup the BLOB repository which are documented here.
  • PBMS now supports transactions independently of the storage engine.
  • There is now a PHP extension for PBMS. Check it out!

XtraDB: The Top 10 enhancements

Note: This post is part 2 of 4 on building our training workshop.

Last week I talked about why you don't want to shard. This week I'm following up with the top 10 enhancements that XtraDB has over the built-in InnoDB included in MySQL 5.0 and 5.1.  Building this list was not really a scientific process - It's always difficult to say which feature is better than another, because a lot of it depends on the individual workload.  My ranking method was to pick the features that have the highest impact and are most applicable to all workloads first:

  1. CPU scalability fixes - XtraDB improves performance on systems with multi-cpus (see docs …
