Like in the past two years, there will be a DotOrg-Pavilion as part of the MySQL Conference & Expo 2008 exhibition floor. We've now concluded the invitation process - the following 15 Open Source projects that support MySQL will be present to showcase their work:
- CMS made simple - a fast and easy way to create a web site and manage its contents.
- DbBlender - a project that implements SQL support in Blender to enable remote repository capabilities.
- Entrance - an easy-to use browser for MySQL databases.

Breaking News! MySQL will be part of the Sun family! MySQL (the M in LAMP) is extremely popular in new "Web 2.0" applications. For example MySQL is #4 at Ohloh.net behind Firefox, Subversion and Apache, and ahead of PHP. Adoption is strong even in the enterprise: 6 out of our 13 Adoption Stories use MySQL. |
We are all extremely excited about the possibilities; both for developers and for deployers. We will keep you posted of developments as they happen. Fun times …
[Read more]Back in 2000 I began writing for swynk.com in hopes of learning more about SQL Server and beginning to make a name for myself in the SQL Server community. That was a little over seven years ago. As SQLServerCentral.com came online, I transitioned to it, writing articles and contributing heavily in the forums. Opportunities abounded from this effort, with the chance to write an eBook, the chance to become a regular columnist for SQL Server Standard Magazine, and later a chance to become a co-author of an in-print book, …

For those of you who enjoy running exotic operating systems: I just stumbled over a port of MySQL 5.0.45 for OS/2 and eComStation. Thanks a lot to Paul Smedley for maintaining this version! He also maintains a large number of other Unix applications that he ported over to OS/2 - very impressive.
I probably don't spend quite enough time following progress around MySQL considering how critical the product is to us. I'd like to consider it part of the infrastructure in a way I treat Red Hat Enterprise Linux, ie something I can trust to make good progress and follow up on a quarterly basis. Naturally we have people who watch both much more closely, but my time simply should, and pretty much is, spent doing something else.
However, it seems MySQL really demands a bit more attention right now. Today I went and read Jeremy Cole's opinion about MySQL Community (a failure), and I have to say I agree on many of the points. MySQL simply has not yet found a model that works as well as that of Red Hat's Fedora vs Enterprise …

Just came off today's MySQL University session about How to Build MySQL on Windows - Reggie did a great
job on explaining how to build the MySQL Server from Source on
Windows using the Microsoft development toolchain and some
additional required tools. I am glad to hear that we're making
progress on making it easier for Windows developers to work with
the source code and Reggie and the other members of our Windows
Task Force (what a nice acronym this one makes!) have plenty of
other ideas for improving that experience.
If you missed his session, the audio file and IRC log will be
published from the MySQL University pages shortly.
And in case you haven't heard about MySQL University before,
check out the pages on the …
