MySQL Cluster 7.3 went GA yesterday and with it came a new member of the MySQL Cluster API family: mysql-js – a native Node.js connector. mysql-js uses the NDB API to connect directly to the data nodes which improves performance compared to executing queries through the MySQL nodes.

We’ve seen the rise of open source software in the enterprise and also beyond the IT industry, but the real keys to openness and its advantages in today’s technology world — where efficient use of cloud computing and supporting services are paramount — exist in open application programming interfaces, or APIs.

Open source software continues to be a critical part of software development, systems administration, IT operations and more, but much of the action in leveraging modern cloud computing and services-based infrastructures centers on APIs. Open APIs are the new open source.

Today I was chatting with a technical friend, and she mentioned that she has a "todo" of writing a decent node.js driver for MySQL. A bit more chatting back and forth, and http://nodejsdb.org/db-drizzle/ was discovered. It was written to use libdrizzle and drizzled, but since libdrizzle can talk to MySQL, it should work for her needs as well.

I would love to see some work done on how well libmysql+mysqld, libdrizzle+mysqld, and libdrizzle+drizzled handle highly concurrent asynchronous event-oriented workloads such as those generated by all these new node.js applications.

I suspect that all sorts of surprising bugs will be discovered.

Being a backend programmer, I rarely code in JavaScript. Today I code a lot of cross browser JavaScript with the fantastic lib jquery and its various extensions. Front end programming is hard to get correct since IE sucks but that's another Blog post that is out of scope. I certainly have more of an appreciation for the people that focus in this area.
