Seeking volunteer test machines for Monolith

Monolith: MySQL server monitoring. I only have servers that run Redhat/Debian/Ubuntu Linux x86 and x86_64. I don’t have machines to test MySQL monitoring for the following OSes. Perhaps you would like to be a test candidate for the new version of Monolith? If so, let me know and you’ll be on the list, as well as get beta testing credit.

OSX Server: PPC and Intel

AIX

FreeBSD / OpenBSD / NetBSD

Windows Server

Solaris: Intel & Sparc

Linux servers that are NOT Intel based.

What this involves: testing the client script, perl modules, snmp stats, and other functions that may require a custom client script for that architecture.

MySQL@FOSDEM 2009: Call for participation

The FOSDEM 2009 organizers have been very kind to us this year: in addition to a Developer Room on Sunday, we now also have a project desk (1 table) on both days! Thank you very much! In summary, this means that there will be the following MySQL-related activities:

  • We will have a Project Stand (one table) on both days
  • On Sunday, we will have a MySQL Developer Room, allowing us to schedule our own track of talks about MySQL and related projects
  • I have been invited to give a talk about "MySQL High Availability Solutions" in the main conference track
  • I also submitted two proposals for lightning talks ("What's new in MySQL 5.1" and "Why you should use Bazaar for maintaining your OSS …

MySQL 5.1 is released

There has been a lot of hoopla with regards to the GA release of MySQL 5.1. I’ve been using it on and off for quite a number of things, and during all my demonstrations, I make extensive use of it.

My advice?

  1. Test it. If something’s not right, report a bug
  2. See your fix, probably go into 5.1.31 or 5.1.32

The 5.1.31 tree is already quite busy. It can only be even better, with more extensive testing. And if history shows anything, people tend to only start using things when they’re GA (not even RC). A point of note: MySQL 5.1 release schedule - please read it.

MySQL University for up to 100 attendees

Yesterday (December 4th), Sergey Petrunia gave a presentation on what's new in MySQL Optimizer. Unfortunately, the slides didn't show up in the Dimdim presentation area, which also means that the recorded session only has Sergey's voice but not the slides. (I've filed a bug in Dimdim's issue tracker.) However, Sergey kept referring to slide numbers in his talk, so it should be fairly easy (just not as convenient as usual) to follow his recorded presentation.

The slides, together with links to the recording and the chat transcript, can be found on the MySQL University session page.

MONyog 2.9 Has Been released

Changes (as compared to 2.83) includes:

Features:

* This release adds a ‘base time’ setting in MONyog. This setting (if defined by user) will be used for calculation of uptime-based counters. The reason for this implementation is that if FLUSH STATUS is executed with a MySQL server, specific server status variables will be reset to the same value as would be after a server restart. However the ‘uptime’ status variable itself is not affected by FLUSH STATUS. And as uptime-based counters will relate the value of cumultive status variables with some intial time, using the ‘uptime’ variable as the initial time will result in calculation of misleading values if FLUSH STATUS was executed. So to get true uptime-based counters in MONyog with servers that do not support the ‘uptime_since_flush_status’ variable (and currently only 5.0 COMMUNITY servers from 5.0.37 do - not ENTERPRISE servers …
