Ummmmmfff…. wind out of my sails today. I believe their was an analyst who predicted this a year ago when Sun bought MySQL…. I wish I could find the article. I am going to head down to the UC floor and get a feel for what people are thinking… will post more as I get time.
Just in case you hadn't heard it, Oracle is buying Sun for $7.4 billion. I wonder what this means for the (already scattered) MySQL community. I hope they treat the community well.
The End? Oracle to Buy Sun
What does Oracle plan to do with MySQL?
MySQL will be an addition to Oracle’s existing suite of database
products, which already includes Oracle Database 11g, TimesTen,
Berkeley DB open source database, and the open source
transactional storage engine, InnoDB., Oracle Sun
FAQ.
No, I don’t have any more details. I am surprised as you may
be.
As a user, I would sit and wait for details before I make my
point. As a user, I would wait for the UC to open its doors to
hear the usual MySQL product announcements. MySQL has gone
through the Sun acquisition, maybe we get used to it. As long
as we do not change and remain as we are (or listen even better
to the community), I am optimistic. I go out and continue to
do …
See Oracle Agrees to Acquire Sun Microsystems (NY Times, 20 April 2009). Wellwell, that’s quite interesting, isn’t it… as to what it means for MySQL, ZFS, OpenSolaris, OpenOffice.org, VirtualBox, Java, and numerous other tidbits, that remains to be seen.
It must be a buzzy kind of day at the MySQL Users Conference 2009, with this news coming in just before the opening… and it’s only been a year since Sun bought MySQL and Jonathan Schwartz did a key note at the conference. I’m sure we’ll hear a lot more from a lot of people, not necessarily content but definitely conjecture and pre-emptive opinions

The AP is reporting that Oracle will buy Sun shares for $9.50 per share, 10 cents more than IBM's reported offer, which fell through. The deal is expected to close in this summer.
Oracle estimates that Sun will contribute more than $1.5 billion and $2 billion to Oracle's profits in the first two years, respectively.
I have been silent on the topic of this year’s MySQL conference, and really, silent in nearly all ways anyway. Today, as the MySQL Users Conference Conference and Expo 2009 starts up, some people will be wondering where I am, so I ought to at least answer that: I am skipping the conference this year.
As my wife can tell you, this is not a decision I’ve taken lightly, and I’ve gone back and forth on it for months and then down to the final days leading up to now. I’ve decided after much internal and external debate just to skip it all this year, including the side conferences and other stuff. Why? The reasons are basically:
- It’s my opinion that the “state of the art” with MySQL has not changed, so I am not really missing much technical content to further myself. There’s a lot of interesting stuff going on with Percona and Google’s work, but I largely follow that through blogs and mailing lists and …
Sun will be bought by Oracle. Will this be the beginning of the end of MySQL?
MySQL has a serious market share. For that oracle has already tried to buy MySQL back in 2006. In an interview responding to the offer in 2006, MySQL chief Marten Mickos told that the reason for declining was that they wanted to keep MySQL an independent product. From that I assume that oracle wanted to merge Oracle DB and MySQL technology. Even though MySQL will be part of a major merger for which the rules aren’t yet clear, you might think that Oracle hasn’t changed their ideas about what they want with MySQL in the last 3 years.
Won’t MySQL just lose most of its market share if it become something else. Other …
