Meet The MySQL Experts Podcast: MySQL Utilities

Managing a MySQL database server can become a full time job. In many occasions, one MySQL DBA needs to manage multiple, even tens of, MySQL servers, and tools that bundle a set of related tasks into a common utility can be a big time saver, allowing you spend more time improving performance and less time executing repeating tasks. While there are several such utility libraries to choose, it is often the case that you need to customize them to your needs. The MySQL Utilities library is the answer to that need. It is open source so you can modify and expand it as you see fit.

In the latest episode of the "Meet the MySQL Experts" podcast series, Chuck Bell, Sr. MySQL Software Developer at Oracle, introduces a variety of recently released MySQL Utilities, and how DBAs can save significant time using the …

Announcing Percona XtraBackup 2.0.1

Percona is glad to announce the release of Percona XtraBackup 2.0.1 on June 25th, 2012. Downloads are available from our download site and Percona Software Repositories.

This release is the current GA (Generally Available) stable release in the 2.0 series.

This release contains over 20 fixed bugs, some of the more significant bugs fixed are:

New Toy – MemSQL

We have a new toy to play with. MemSQL is a “Lock Free”, Just In TIme (GIJ) SQL compler (C++) that is MySQL client compatible. It was developed by two former Facebook developers, Eric Frenkiel and Nikita Shamgunov,  and is said to be the world’s fastest.

I gave it a 30min review.  The install was incredibly simple. I use mysqldump to dump a WordPress tables directly into MemSQL and all when well until I  tried to use the website.  MemSQL is NOT a MySQL drop in replacement. But, they don’t say it is.

MemSQL is ACID compliment and might fit well in a small application needing high read write transactions. (Think stock trading.) There is no descriptions on how to scale.  …

Martin’s blog (Mi Buenos Aires Querido) was named after a tango, so I decided to follow his lead. The 4 lines of the refrain make reference to someone returning to Buenos Aires after 20 years, now looking a little bit older. I moved to the US about 15 years ago and have returned many times to visit. However, I have never gone back to participate in an event like this with so many renowned speakers from the MySQL community. The list include many people with whom I have worked with over the past decade. …
