Having read a weeks worth of reactions to MySQL ending up at Oracle, I just want to say that by far the aptest1 commentary goes to Chris Powers from the Falcon team. A picture indeed says more than 1k words:

A new build of the Tungsten Replicator is now available. As you probably know from reading this blog Tungsten Replicator provides advanced open source replication for MySQL. There is also a commercial extension to support Oracle. Tungsten Replicator 1.0.1 includes a number of important improvements.

• Much better performance -- Current benchmark results show throughput of up to 650 inserts per second using a single slave apply thread. We are well on the way to our goal of 1000 inserts per second.

Okay, so I heard the big news. And just in case you haven’t, here it is from Sheeri Cabral: Oracle Buys Sun. This is a sea-change in the hi-tech world, and the DB part of it will also get rocked, Sun being the home of MySQL. There’s lots of comment in Sheeri’s post, and indeed, all over the database blogging world. I will try here to cover the best of it.

To follow up on Chuck’s post from earlier this week, I want to say that yes, on Monday morning I raced across the office to share the crazy news that Oracle is trying to buy MySQL Sun.  Though, I don’t remember yelling.

But, I did have a real point here and that is that the numbers that he quoted are prior to the Enterprise / Community split that happened late in 2006 and since then, the landscape has changed dramatically.

Today, there are at least 5 different major forks of MySQL to choose from (and I won’t even talk about the already complicated version and storage engine choices that most companies have to make).  I am counting MySQL Community (freely available)l MySQL Enterprise (allowing for enterprise support contracts with Sun); Our Delta  (a patched MySQL Community version); Monty Widenus’ MariaDB; and of course, Drizzle.   I’m sure there are others that I’m forgetting.  This has the …

"Interesting" was probably the most overused word at the MySQL Conference that just ended yesterday. Everyone is waiting to find out more about the Oracle acquisition of Sun. As a community we need to find some synonyms or things will become very tiresome. Personally I vote for intriguing.

This year’s Oracle Open World is taking place from October 11-15th, 2009 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, CA. Paul Vallee noted that Oracle’s acquisition of Sun means that Open World will probably want a MySQL track, and Matt Yonkovit of Big DBA Head mentioned that a blog post on it would spread the word.
