There's definitely more and more buzz on and around cloud computing and different solutions to support it nowadays!

This was evident while visiting LinuxCon/CloudOpen in San Diego a few weeks ago, where I spoke about high availability solutions for MySQL. Most cloud sessions were highly attended, and I could sense an excitement in the air with regards to the cloud. It was also evident, however, that there is only a small percentage of people today truly taking advantage of the cloud. It seems that despite all the excitement, there is a large portion of potential users who don't know how to use the cloud, or what the benefits and potential drawbacks are.

Sitting at the Hilton in San Francisco, listening to the MySQL Connect opening Keynotes, sparks interesting thoughts. Thoughts about the future of MySQL, the Oracle stewardship, the MariaDB alternative and the advantage of the solutions provided by the MySQL Ecosystem.
But there is something missing. I know something is not part of this picture, but I can't figure out what it is.
At the end of keynotes and pane,l I turn to the exhibitors area, an approx 800 sq ft., 50% occupied by Oracle. At the bottom left corner stands my answer. 
The small yellow cubic hive of AWS was at the top of the rollup that reminds of MySQL and RDS, admittedly the most used version of MySQL in the cloud so far. And here is the missing part.

The Cassandra Storage Engine (SE) allows access to Cassandra databases from MariaDB/MySQL, and to provide data integration between the SQL and NoSQL worlds.

Have you ever needed to

• grab some of Cassandra’s data from your web frontend, or SQL query?
• insert a few records into Cassandra from some part of your app?

With Cassandra SE, this is easily possible. Cassandra SE makes Cassandra’s column families appear as MariaDB/MySQL tables that you can insert to, update, and select from. You can perform joins on Cassandra data, or againist data in Cassandra and data in MariaDB.

Infor announced this week, that they will provide open source database alternatives to some of their products. MariaDB has been chosen, tested, and certified by Infor to be the open source database of choice (together with MySQL) for the Infor LN and ION products. Infor LN is Infor’s flagship ERP and is sometimes better known by its former name, Baan. It has 25 years of manufacturing know-how built into it and is used by more than 5,000 companies worldwide in a wide range of industries. These include automotive, industrial equipment and machinery, high tech and electronics, and aerospace and defense. This is a big stamp of approval that even the most critical systems can be run on MariaDB.

I thought I had to start the post with this picture. Today I feel a bit like the day I went to the hospital for a pregnancy scan. As you may expect, seeing the baby moving was incredibly emotional, and I can feel some similar emotions with this announcement.

The fall conference season is starting.  I will be doing a number of talks including a keynote on "future proofing" MySQL through the use of data fabrics.  Data fabrics allow you to build durable, long-lasting systems that take advantage of MySQL's strengths today but also evolve to solve future problems using fast-changing cloud and big data technologies.  The talk brings together ideas that Ed Archibald (our CTO) and I have been working on for over two decades.  I'm looking forward to rolling them out to a larger crowd.
