Log Buffer #286, A Carnival of the Vanities for DBAs

With the summer approaching in Australia and Winter making inroads in Canada, the contrasts are also vivid in the blog posts of Oracle, SQL Server and MySQL. Relishing this distinguished medley, Log Buffer Edition is blossoming with new blog posts in Log Buffer #286. Oracle: Julian Dontcheff throws some light on not-much discussed Bloom Filters. [...]

Oracle High Availability and More with Continuent Tungsten

Oracle is the most powerful database system in the world. However, Oracle's expensive and complex replication makes it difficult to build highly available applications or move data in real-time to data warehouses and popular databases like MySQL.

In this video (recording of our 9/13/12 webinar) you will learn how Continuent Tungsten solves problems with Oracle replication at a fraction of the

Oracle Training on Demand – MySQL for Beginners, Day One

Today I took the first day of MySQL for Beginners from Oracle’s Training on Demand offerings.  From the course overview,

“This hands-on class covers the fundamentals of SQL and relational databases, using MySQL[tm] as a teaching tool.  The course is suitable for new or existing users of MySQL who have little or no previous experience with a relational database management system.”

(For more details on this course, and other training offerings and formats, go to http://education.oracle.com .)

Here are some of my opinions and observations:

The class came up very easily for me, no glitches or waiting. (I used Firefox today.  I’ll try IE tomorrow, then others.)

MySQL Connector/Python v1.0.6 beta available

We released the second beta of MySQL Connector/Python v1.0. You can download v1.0.6 from the MySQL website and the change history can be found in the online manual.

Usually, beta releases do not have big changes, but we had to push some code which did not make the previous one and it really had to go into v1.0. The exceptions raised by Connector/Python are now mapped against the ‘SQLState’ found in the MySQL server errors. This makes it much easier to maintain and clearer which exception can be expected. It is, however, possible to override how errors are …

Log Buffer #285, A Carnival of the Vanities for DBAs

If the basics are right, then the foundation is more likely to be solid, and the growth on that foundation is almost sure to follow the progressive path. Bloggers of Oracle, SQL Server and MySQL are striving hard to set the basics right of the technology in order to help laying a sound foundation for [...]
