Ndb software architecture

I'm sure that someone else can describe the actual history of Ndb development much better, but here's my limited and vague understanding.

  • Ndb is developed in an environment (Ericsson AXE telecoms switch) where Ericsson's PLEX is the language of choice
    PLEX supports multiple state machines (known as blocks) sending messages (known as signals) between them with some system-level conventions for starting up, restart and message classes. Blocks maintain internal state and define signal handling routines for different signal types. Very little abstraction within a block beyond subroutines is supported. Mike Hogan, CEO of ScaleDB spoke at the Boston MySQL User Group in September 2009:

ScaleDB is a storage engine for MySQL that delivers shared-disk clustering. It has been described as the Oracle RAC of MySQL. Using ScaleDB, you can scale your cluster by simply adding nodes, without partitioning your data. Each node has full read/write capability, eliminating the need for slaves, while delivering cluster-level load balancing. MySQL Cluster development

MySQL Cluster is the name given to one or more MySQL Server processes, connected to an Ndb Cluster database. From the point of view of the MySQL Server processes, the Ndb Cluster is a Storage Engine, implementing transactional storage of tables containing rows. From the point of view of the Ndb Cluster database, the MySQL Server processes are API nodes, performing DDL and DML transactions on tables stored in the cluster. Both exist independently – Ndb Cluster can be used without attached MySQL Server processes, but almost all users of Ndb Cluster connect at least one MySQL Server for DDL and administration.

It's almost two weeks now since FrOSCon and the OpenSQL Camp subconference have taken place in Sankt Augustin, Germany — about time for a summary and update from my side!

Updating the Cluster DBA Exam

It is time to update the MySQL Cluster exam. The current exam was written when the Cluster software was at version 5.1 and 7.0.5 is available for download. Reviewing the old exam questions shows some of them are badly dated.

But updating the exam requires more than simple edits of the questions. The MySQl 5.1 Cluster DBA Certification Study Guide is the book to use for studying for the exam. And having a study guide is a vital tool for those of us who prefer to self study for an exam. Sadly, some of the authors are no longer with Sun and I am sure those still around have minimal spare cycles in their schedule.

MySQL Cluster Data Node restart times

Restarts are required for certain, infrequent maintenance activities. Note that there is no loss of service while a single node restarts.

When a data node restarts, it first attempts to load the data into memory from the local log files and then it will catch up with any subsequent changes by retrieveing them from the surviving node(s) in its node group.

 Based on this, you would expect the time taken to restart a data node to be influenced by:

  1. The amount of data that was stored on the data node before the restart
  2. Rate of updates being made to the data during the restart
  3. Network performance (assuming the data is being updated during recovery)

The times will also be influenced bycertain configuration parameters, performance of the host machine and whether the multi-threaded data node (ndbmtd) is being used.
