Looking for MySQL-ish things around Thailand/SE Asia

I recently relocated to Khon Kaen, Thailand for 3 months. Since I can do my Open Query work from anywhere (as long as there is a decent internet connection with not too much latency) that is entirely no problem. It is a nice city, far from the business/busyness of Bangkok. Almost noone speaks english here, which makes even the simplest task an adventure (imagine miming an umbrella in front of 10 giggling store employees)

Now that I have gotten settled in Khon Kaen, I am looking for fun work-related things to do around here: conferences, user groups, interesting projects etc. Anything goes really, even if it is not so much work-related. I also have free time on my hands

I am quite likely going to do a tutorial on MMM at FOSS.my in Kuala Lumpur. It’s still waiting on a few things since I announced my availability super-late, but I have good hope. I am turning to our readers to ask for …

Speaking at CPOSC 2009

I’ll be attending and presenting at the 2009 Central Pennsylvania Open-Source Conference. My session is on Maatkit. I see Tom Clark has a session on MySQL performance! I hope to see you there — I’ve really become a fan of these regional conferences.

By the way, I’ve also created a speaker badge by adapting a wallpaper someone else made — you can find it on the sidebar of my blog if you’re also a speaker.

Speaking at Enterprise LAMP Summit 2009

I am speaking at Enterprise LAMP Summit 2009 (and also should be speaking at the Camp the next day, but I see the schedule isn’t quite updated yet). My talk at the Summit will not be on the future landscape of MySQL — that’s a mistake. My talk’s title isn’t finalized yet.

This conference is the first weekend in November, in the Nashville area. I hope to see you there!

EdUIConf 2009 recap

I spoke at EdUIConf 2009, a new conference in my hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia. My presentation was on web interface performance; it's basically a twist on front-end performance in general. I slanted the talk towards web developers, rather than assuming the audience has full control over their Apache configuration.

The conference was relatively short -- two days. The first day was full-day sessions. I skipped from Molly's session on emerging web standards (good; summary of what I witnessed: HTML5 cometh) to Dan's session on visual design, which was excellent. The second day I wasn't able to make it for the morning, and …

FOSS: War is over (if you want it)

At the Open World Forum event in Paris this morning I presented a quick overview of the state of free and open source software in 2009 and a look at the trends shaping FOSS into the next decade. The presentation was just 10 minutes rather than the 20 I had originally understood it to be, so I wanted to use the blog to expand a little on the discussion and my thinking.

War is over (if you want it)

Aside from the ongoing adoption of open source, one of the trends that has defined FOSS in 2009 has been the numerous declarations

Storage Miniconf Deadline Extended!

The linux.conf.au organisers have given all miniconfs an additional few weeks to spruik for more proposal submissions, huzzah!

So if you didn’t submit a proposal because you weren’t sure whether you’d be able to attend LCA2010, you now have until October 23 to convince your boss to send you and get your proposal in.

Speaking at Highload.ru

This is a quick announcement to say that I'll be speaking at HighLoad++ this year (October 12-14 in Moscow).  I'll be presenting on a few topics:

  • MySQL Performance Tuning (Conference Session)
  • Quick Wins with Third Party Patches for MySQL (Conference Session)
  • Performance Optimization for MySQL with InnoDB and XtraDB * (Full day class)

This will mark my first trip to Russia - and oh boy am I excited.  I'm taking a few days vacation after so I can tour around Saint Petersburg.  Want to say hello?  Let me know at morgan-at-percona-dot-com!

* Yes, this is the same as our InnoDB course we taught last week in Santa Clara and …

Off to California!

Today's the day I fly to Los Angeles to teach a private training class, en route to Santa Clara/San Francisco for our public training workshops next week.

Our Montreal practice teach at Station-C went great - it was an opportunity to do a road test and iron out any kinks in the delivery.

What did I learn in the process?

  • Solid examples provide context.  I didn't have the best SHOW GLOBAL STATUS data for the practice teach, but I've edited my slides and our official classes will have much better information.
  • Operational issues are one of the most important things people want to hear more information on.  A fair number of students know that dropping an index is not as painless as it should be, but not everyone knows about tools like Flipper and MMM.  It's not the main focus of our InnoDB/XtraDB workshop, but we will cover how to solve these …

Speaking about Maatkit at CPOSC

I’m going to present on Maatkit at the CPOSC conference in central Pennsylvania on Saturday, October 17th 2009. I’ll give an overview of the toolkit, which is no longer an easy task in a single session. I see a number of other interesting sessions have been accepted. It looks like it’ll be a good conference.
