While talking about Sun's market penetration with open source software, Jonathan Schwartz, Sun's CEO, slipped in a short mention of the mobile market saying something along the lines of "Sun is going to be entering the mobile market later on this year". I got my registration for Google App Engine this morning after being Waitlisted previously.
Between flying for about 15 hrs tomorrow and then the 2008 MySQL Conference & Expo where I’m presenting and running an Exhibitors booth, fat chance I’ll get to look into this much over the next week.
Pity!
Google has just announced their alternative to Amazon’s s3 called
‘App Engine’.
I think that if this is successful it will provide a shift in
some of the basic web development economics and practices, even
more than Amazon’s s3 has.
why?
- Small hosting providers (ones that offer a shell account for
$12/month) will be marginalized. why pay for something when you
get it for free?
- M&A. It will create a 3rd platform to develop on. you
currently have LAMP and Windows. The google app engine provides a
3rd. The major difference is you can’t buy it. If we acquire a
company who runs on this platform we have 2 choices. continue
paying google for the infrastructure, or redevelop it onto LAMP.
of course this suits google as their integration costs are
lessened. Google might provide a ‘open source’ version of their
infrastructure.. but I doubt it.

There has been plenty of press this week regarding Microsoft making a bid for Yahoo. This week the Wall Street Journal Article From Uncertain Future To Leading Yahoo Bid has prompted me to the following observations. I quote several points:
The bid, he said on the call, is “the next major milestone in Microsoft’s companywide transformation” to incorporate online services.
as Microsoft pushes the bid and, if successful, tries to meld Yahoo with Microsoft.
Microsoft had been negotiating to buy online ad company DoubleClick Inc. but lost that deal to Google, which paid $3.1 billion. Microsoft in May countered, spending $6 billion on online ad company aQuantive Inc.

The only criticism of the deal I could possibly give is that MySQL is still on the early phase of an exponential adoption curve and I think they’ve got lots of growth yet to come. But really, a billion dollars has a lot if not most of that growth factored into the price already. Think of what [...]
