Performance of Inserts on Partitions – MySQL 5.6 v/s MySQL 5.7

Recently, I was discussing with one of my colleagues about how insert statement performs for MySQL partitioned tables. General prediction is that it should be slower than for non-partitioned tables, but how much that we didn’t know. So, I thought let’s test with different types of partitions (i.e range, list and hash) and also with different number of partitions and check how’s performance. As people says, MySQL 5.7 is must faster than old one, so I also tested partitions with it.

So, I took simple table with 3.2M records on Centos 6.7 VM (4 core with 2GB RAM) with default my.cnf settings and then created tables for range, list and hash partitioning with 5,25,50 and 100 partitions. i.e with 5 partition (range and list), the table structures were like

Jörg Brühe: Multiple MySQL Instances on a Single Machine

Typically, on a single machine (be it a physical or a virtual one) only a single MySQL instance (process) is running. This is perfectly ok for all those situations where a single instance is sufficient, like for storing small amounts of data (RedHat using MySQL for postfix, KDE using it for akonadi, ...), as well as those where a dedicated machine per MySQL instance is appropriate (high CPU load, memory fully loaded, availability requirements).

But there are also those users who want to (or would like to) have multiple instances which would still fit into a single machine. Even among them, a single instance per machine is typical. For this, there are good reasons:

  • MySQL comes with defaults for files (config file, error log, ...) and directories (data directory, binlogs, ...) which would cause conflicts between multiple instances (unless they are changed).

Testing Samsung storage in tpcc-mysql benchmark of Percona Server

SQL injection in the MySQL server! (of the proxy kind)

As work on WarpSQL (Shard-Query 3) progresses, it has outgrown MySQL proxy.  MySQL proxy is a very useful tool, but it requires LUA scripting, and it is an external daemon that needs to be maintained.  The MySQL proxy module for Shard-Query works well, but to make WarpSQL into a real distributed transaction coordinator, moving the proxy logic inside of the server makes more sense.

The main benefit of MySQL proxy is that it allows a script to "inject" queries between the client and server, intercepting the results and possibly sending back new results to the client.  I would like similar functionality, but inside of the server.

For example, I would like to implement new SHOW commands, and these commands do not need to be …
