A few days ago Oracle offered me a position of Oracle ACE Director, and I accepted it. Thanks
Oracle. I'm glad to see that Oracle has evaluated my activities
and we can have a good relationships each other. Oracle has been
great for MySQL so far and I'd be happy to keep
contributions.
Since I live in Tokyo and my native language is Japanese, I
usually do community activities in Japanese (speaking at
conferences in Tokyo, publishing books written in Japanese, etc).
I'd like to do more in English, and my employer DeNA thankfully
supports it. Right now it's confirmed that I'll speak at
OSCON.Data in July, and at Oracle Open World in October.
Personally I haven't traveled to Europe for years so it's great
if I have an opportunity to speak at MySQL/Linux conferences in
Europe.

[Read more]While Oracle deserves some praise for its donation of OpenOffice.org code to the Apache Foundation, it is disappointing again to see a legitimate open source market contender that has been marginalized by miscommunication and mismanagement of the project by a large vendor.
OpenOffice.org, warts and all, was probably the most significant competition for Microsoft Office for years and in many ways demonstrated the advantages of open source, helping usher in wider use of it, as well as greater usability. OO.o was in fact my reason for originally investigating and moving to open source software more than a decade ago. Regardless of past mismanagement of community and technology, that competitive factor has been diminished greatly since Oracle took ownership of OO.o. Now, after prompting a fork — as has …

Apple offers some cover
After developer complaints that Apple was leaving them out to dry, in regards to the Lodsys patent threats being aimed their way, the House of Jobs stepped up to the plate and announced that they considered iOS developers to be covered by the existing licenses granted to Apple by Lodsys for in-game purchases.
This is a bit of a good-news, bad-news story from an intellectual property perspective, as it doesn't offer any relief to non-Apple developers from the patents themselves. Apple paid off Lodsys, which in a sense increases the perceived validity of the patents. Other non-Apple-based developers (such as Valve's Steam), could find …
