Enabling Global Transaction Identifiers Without Downtime in MySQL 5.7.6

A much requested feature has made it to MySQL 5.7.6: Global Transaction Identifiers (GTIDs) can now be enabled online, without stopping writes, synchronizing servers, or restarting servers.

We introduced GTIDs in MySQL 5.6.6. GTIDs allow, among other things, seamless fail-over after a master has crashed. This enables highly available applications, since service can continue without interruption even if the master crashes. For new deployments, you could easily enable GTIDs right away – just set gtid-mode=ON in the configuration files. For deployments that accept a certain amount of downtime, you could switch from off to on too. However, for big deployments with strict limitations on downtime, this was more problematic, since you had to stop updates, sync all servers, and restart all servers simultaneously with GTIDs enabled, and this would lead to several minutes of downtime.

MySQL Replication is very simple to set up. In this post I’ll discuss its importance and five handy tools for monitoring and managing MySQL replication.

Multi-source Replication with Galera Cluster for MySQL

Multi-source replication means that one server can have multiple masters from which it replicates. Why multi-source? One good reason is to consolidate databases (e.g. merge your shards) for analytical reporting or as a centralized backup server. MariaDB 10 already has this feature, and MySQL 5.7 will also support it. 

It is possible to set up your Galera Cluster as an aggregator of your masters in a multi-source replication setup, we’ll walk you through the steps in this blog. Note that the howto is for Galera Cluster for MySQL (Codership) and Percona XtraDB Cluster. In a separate post, we’ll show you how to configure MariaDB Cluster 10 instead. Talking at Open Source India 2014

I will be talking at Open Source India scheduled at NIMHANS convention center at Bangalore on 7th and 8th of Nov 2014.

Oracle has been associated with the Open Source India conference for the past 4 years and this will be the 5th year when we will be taking part in this conference and talking about MySQL to the open source community.

OSI gives us a great opportunity and a platform to speak to and hear from the open source community. There have been some great interactions with developers, users, customers of MySQL and some really great people involved with the open source movement in India.
