MySQL and Drizzle Developers: Upgrade to Bazaar 1.6.1 Now

Attention MySQL engineers and Drizzle contributors: upgrade to Bazaar 1.6.1 now to get some fairly massive performance speedups for bzr branch commands. As I noted in my last article on Launchpad code management, Bazaar 1.5 was having some performance issues when branching large project trees such as MySQL. In the article, I showed it was taking Bazaar 1.5 91 minutes to do the initial branch. With John Arbash Meinel's performance patches, the time to branch was cut down to 23 minutes, which is a fantastic improvement.

Ubuntu users: grab the 1.6.1 Bazaar package for your Ubuntu version from the Launchpad.net Bazaar Project Package Archive.

Mac OSX users:: grab the disk image here, with …

PBXT Beta Version Released!

I am pleased to announce that the Beta version of PBXT has just been released. You can download the source code of the storage engine from www.primebase.org/download. I have also updated the documentation for this version.

Configuring and building the engine is easier than ever now. To configure PBXT all you have to do is specify the path to the MySQL source code tree (after building MySQL), for example:

./configure --with-mysql=/home/foo/mysql/mysql-5.1.26-rc

The PBXT configure command will retrieve all required options from the MySQL build. For example whether to do a debug or optimized build and where to install the plugin are determined automatically, depending on how you configured MySQL.

This was a source …

OpenSQL Camp Has a New Home

Though the event is still happening in Charlottesville, VA Nov. 14-16th (Fri night through Sunday), the new web page for OpenSQL Camp is http://www.opensqlcamp.org. The content has been ported over to MediaWiki, and a captcha has been put in place that is activated on any page change that adds an external URL.

Whether you are into MySQL, PostgreSQL, Drizzle, or some other open source SQL database, go forth and register for OpenSQL Camp, without having to login! (Disclosure: if you do not create a login, your IP is tracked.)

Huge Performance Improvement for Bazaar Coming Soon

In writing my last article, I mentioned working with John Arbash Meinel, one of the lead developers of Bazaar, in attempting to diagnose and fix the performance bottlenecks apparent in using Bazaar with larger, history-rich projects like the MySQL Server. Well, after running some tests and building a custom branch of Bazaar that John pointed me to, I am happy to tell you that help is just around the corner. In my last article, you saw that doing a bzr branch lp:mysql-server took 91 minutes. This was a significant barrier to entry, I recognize. So, I think you'll be happy to see the results below, taken yesterday using John's patched-up Bazaar branch:

[529][jpipes@serialcoder: /home/jpipes/repos/mysql-server/5.1]$ time test_bzr …

A Contributor's Guide to Launchpad.net - Part 2 - Code Management

In this second part of my Launchpad guidebook series, I'll be covering the code management and repository features of Launchpad.net. If you missed the first part of my series, go check it out and get established on Launchpad.net. Then pop back to this article to dive into the magic of http://code.launchpad.net. In this article, we'll cover the following aspects of the code management pieces of Launchpad:

  • The Structure of Project Source Code on Launchpad.net
  • Pulling Code into a Local Repository
  • Creating a Local Working Branch for Bug Fixing
  • Pushing Code to Launchpad
  • Notifying a Merge Captain of Your Code Pushes
  • Keeping Trunk Up To Date
  • Merging Local Code with a Trunk …

OSCon 2008 Video Matrix

As part of a project of Technocation, Inc I took a whole bunch of videos at OSCon 2008. The conference was about a month ago, and about 2 weeks ago I’d finished processing and uploading all the videos, but it was only today where I had the 5-6 hours I needed to finish posting all the video, and making this matrix of video.

The video may not be the quality that the O’Reilly folks took and put up on blip tv’s OSCon site, but all the videos here are freely downloadable or playable in your browser.

Why Drizzle Will Succeed

I have not said much about Drizzle here; that is because there is not much to say. It is premature, really, to say anything about it at this point. Some have said they will support Drizzle; as Pythian supports several database systems, it is very likely that we will support Drizzle as well. Particularly since there is in-house Drizzle expertise already. But I digress; my point is that it is premature to really say much about Drizzle.

My involvement in Drizzle goes back to around the end of April/beginning of May 2008. Given my early involvement, (more…)

Last Week in Drizzle - Vol 3

This is the third post in the weekly series "Last Week in Drizzle" where we summarize the efforts of various folks in the Drizzle community over the past week. This edition covers Aug 18th through the 24th. As with the week before, a number of developers and community advocates continue to refactor the code base, come together in discussions on the mailing list, and brainstorm on how to solve the tough problems that Drizzle is trying to address. It sounds like many in the community have been swamped this week, but there's still plenty to report. Jay Pipes and myself are tag teaming Last Week in Drizzle.

Continued Growth in the Drizzle Community

Drizzle mailing list has 191 members, up from 148 last week As I type this, there are 42 folks hanging out on the #drizzle Freenode …

Get linked to Drizzle

We are always looking at different ways to help promote, inform and identify contributers, users and supports for Drizzle.

One way is to join the Linked In Drizzle group (click here when logged in). You will already see a few MySQL die hards, but also the need breed of names that are part of Drizzlemania.
