This year at Percona Live Open Source Database Conference 2018 we are live streaming the Keynote Talks on Day 1 and 2.

Percona is streaming the keynotes on Tuesday, April 24, 2018, and Wednesday, April 25, 2018 beginning at 9 AM PDT (both days). The keynote speakers include people from VividCortex, Upwork, Oracle, Netflix and many more. The keynote panels feature a cloud discussion and a cool technologies showcase.

Narrowing down which queries to optimize is a step in database administration that is often skipped - however it shouldn't be!  

Why is selecting the right queries to optimize so important? There are several reasons. 

Penny-Wise, Pound-Foolish  Look at the forest, not just the trees, and optimize globally, not locally. If you’re optimizing a query that never causes a user-visible problem, doesn’t impact other queries, and doesn’t significantly load servers, you might be “optimizing” things that don’t matter, spending more money than you save. Your time has value, too! Keep in mind, too, that optimizing a query that generates only 1% of the database’s overall load will not be a significant benefit to the bottom line.   Whack-A-Mole Queries It’s very common to  find a slow query in a log file, try re-executing it and  then find that it is fast. …

SCALE16x is over. Percona had a large showing — both Peter Zaitsev & myself had talks, and the booth in the expo hall saw Rick Golba, Marc Sherwood, and Dave Avery also pop by. The lead scanner suggests we had several hundred conversations — read Dave Avery’s summary. My talk went well, though during Q&A the number of questions I got about MariaDB Server was quite interesting (considering it wasn’t part of my talk!). I’m pleased to announce that VividCortex now offers 99th percentile metrics to help understand latency outliers in a query workload. These metrics provide visibility beyond the average latency, help identify the worst outliers, and improve focus on the customer experience. They are offered for all of the databases we currently support when using On-Host monitoring.

Latency percentile metrics are one of our most popular feature requests, so we know this will make a lot of you very happy! We actually started collecting these metrics some time ago; you’ll have p99 latency metrics for the last couple of months if you look back at your historical metrics.
