Rename Maria Contest Winner

After two months of submissions, Monty Program employee review, community voting and Monty’s final decision, we are happy to announce that the Maria storage engine will henceforth be known as …

Aria!

Congratulations to Chris Tooley who suggested the name. Chris said about Aria in his submission, “Maria without the ‘M’, plus aria is a pleasant musical term.” Chris is now the proud new owner of a System 76 Meerkat net-top computer. Thanks to our good friends at System76 for providing this nifty prize.

Hopefully, in time, “Aria” will also be a pleasing database engine term. And now we will not have the confusion between MariaDB and Maria.

Last month, I blogged about a case involving InnoDB, where all threads acting on InnoDB tables completely stuck for about few hours doing nothing; until we found a way to[...]

db4free.net blog has moved and what’s new

It was about time to switch to something new.

I finally have my new blog launched at www.mpopp.net which is something that I had planned for quite a while. This new blog is a replacement for my old blog at db4free.blogspot.com where people will find news and posts about db4free.net and MySQL. But since db4free.blogspot.com used to be specific to db4free.net and MySQL (implied by its name), it was not a good place to blog about various different topics as well, which I found increasingly limiting. So I decided for a new blog, run by WordPress, which will allow me to categorize my blog posts to target people who are interested in specific topics.

Some of them will be:

New feature: Prompt for user + password

This is for users who don't like HeidiSQL to store usernames and passwords somewhere:

Activating this new checkbox will ask you for username and password on demand, each time you connect to this session. Both previously stored username and password are taken as the default credentials when prompting.

Use MySQL binlog to collect accesslogs

<p>The easiest way to get user statistics from your own site is probably binding third-party tools like, e.g. Google Analytics into your code or parsing the logfiles with AWstats or webalizer. Evaluating your own logged data is the best way to look over the (imaginary) shoulder of users and bots. Moving static content on different servers remain the accesslog also manageable and free from unnecessary data.</p>

Is OpenStack Cloud Computing Rocket Science?

There’s a real explosion of cloud platforms and management tools, it seems you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting one these days. In the commercial proprietary solutions space you have – CA’s 3Terra AppLogic, Enomaly, Nimbula, RightScale. In open source there are EucalyptusCloud.com, Open Nebula and …

yum install mariadb

I`m not the biggest fan of openSUSE but this weeks post by Colin Charles makes me happy ..

openSUSE users can now do a mariadb install from their default repositories.

With all the fuzz about Snoracle and MySQL's future last year to me it became clear that we would end up having different MySQL based distributions, probably with different names, and that it would be up to the Linux distributions to provide the users with what they preferred, working with those Linux distributions
therefore would be very important for the MySQL distributions.

Sadly my Fedora box doesn't allow me to do a yum install mariadb yet ... but I`m sure that's only a matter of time ..

This article gives a step-by-step instruction for visual database creation.
There is a lot of instruments that allow database developers avoid monotonous and error prone manual writing of scripts for tables creation.
