Selecting the most appropriate solution for a MySQL HA infrastructure is as much a business and philosophical decision as it is a technical one, but often the choice is made without adequately considering all three perspectives.  When too much attention is paid to one of these aspects at the cost of the others, the resulting system may be over-engineered, poorly-performing, and/or various other flavors of suboptimal.

I think it’s worth noting that since January 2012 there was no changes to MHA (0.53). Yoshinori Matsunobu made two releases in December (release notes), one in time for my Percona Live London 2012 talk. Thanks Yoshi!  This is a stable release. I have been using MHA on our(DeNA's) cross-datacenter environments. We had tens of failover opportunities and MHA worked successfully in all cases.

Although I no longer maintain hackmysql.com, I still actively develop MySQL tools. An article I wrote, 10 essential MySQL tools for admin, was published today. I hope no one’s feelings are hurt if their tool isn’t in the list, but it was rather difficult to compile the list given that so many tools are either not actively developed, not tested, or not well documented. Given lag time between writing and publishing, I was not able to write about Yoshinori’s MHA or newer tools. And given length constraints, I was not able to write about more tools. In any case, the world of MySQL tools is alive and well.
