The latest from the MySQL community

The call for participation for Percona Live Data Performance Conference 2016 is still open. Deadline for submission is November 29th.

There are two immediately noticeable novelties in this edition:

• The name change. Not "MySQL & Expo" but "Data Performance Conference." It makes the conference open to a broader set of topics.
• The community voting. Proposals can get evaluated by the community before the review committee takes decisions.

I think it's a good choice. Other conferences adopt the same method. The attendees choose what they want to see and hear. In this case, it's mixed method, where the community voting is used as an indication for the review committee, which, by my understanding, has the final say.

The Call for Papers for the OpenSQL Camp 2009 (European Edition) has ended yesterday — we received 27 excellent session proposals from various Open Source Database projects. I would like to say a big "Thank You" to everyone who submitted a talk! In the beginning I was a bit concerned that the conference would become too MySQL-centric, but this fortunately changed in the last few days.

Sadly we now have more than double the amount of sessions than we can actually host, which means that we will have to review and vote on the sessions to distill the final program. We've formed a small committee that will perform this task (currently consisting of …

I wanted to find a way to put together the valuable information that the community produces about MySQL, a way that would let me easily find the interesting content that I may have missed when on vacation, or when busy with a conference, a company meeting, or a long stream of coding.

That wish started to take shape last year, when I was traveling with Dups during the East Coast tour. I drove, he took notes. He drove, I took more notes. During meals and walking breaks we discussed and refined the idea. When we went back home, a plan was ready. Dups started coding in January.

Just before the MySQL User Conference, Dups implemented a small little feature for Planet MySQL: “voting”. We wanted to see what a voting system might mean to you, our PlanetMySQL readers.

The question is now how to improve the voting mechanism to make it more useful. The goal is for everyone to see what you and your peers think are the best PlanetMySQL entries over a given week.

Here are some of the options:

1. Open up voting to everyone regardless of whether they are logged in or not. Currently you can only vote if you are logged in with a MySQL.com account. Let’s face it, a login gives a barrier to entry even as much as it gives us the security of knowing we won’t get spammed.
