In a blog post today, Stefan of the MySQL
documentation team says that the MySQL documents will not be open
sourced. Now, I have to go back and review the MySQL CE Keynote
that Karen gave, but I'm pretty sure she said to the audience
that it was "going to happen". Why would she even bother bringing
it up in the keynote if it was never really being considered
anyway? There has been little community input on this, and I for
one am outraged that a GPL product would not release the
documentation as GPL too.
I'm now totally convinced that MySQL does not understand, and
will never understand the MySQL community.
Is this an opportunity for Oracle to try to stall community
participation in MySQL? I don't want to be paranoid, but this
could just be the hints of bold new changes in MySQL strategy,
especially considering Karen's …

Mosso the Rackspace Cloud now has a Drizzle developer image much like the first Drizzle AMI on EC2.
The Mosso interface is definitely different, it’s a GUI, and I definitely prefer CLI, but it’s a simpler navigation for a new user. I suspect an API may be available.
I had an issue with the backup process, more the lack of feedback. The Knowledge Base didn’t help, so both calling and Live Chat directed me ultimately to the same person. I also found a bug in the backup process, that is being able to select an incomplete backup to try and launch a new server. I talked to Support about and apparently already known.
And in true open source form, the Drizzle version is actually one point higher then yesterday’s AWS image.
…[Read more]This is really cool. Rackspace is hiring people to work on Drizzle full-time for their cloud product, Mosso. Adrian Otto writes the Drizzle mailing list:
I was speaking with Eric Day at the developer conference, and I mentioned that Rackspace is wiling to employ full time developers for the specific purpose of furthering the Drizzle project’s mission. He suggested that I email you on this list becuase he expected there would be interest in this offer. If you work on the project now part time, and want to make it a full time job working exclusively on the Drizzle project, let me know. The Rackspcae Cloud believes …

At the Drizzle Developer Day on Friday, I got to meet Adrian Otto from Rackspace. Rackspace has a cloud offering (think Aamazon EC2) that's called Mosso and is willing to employ full time developers who spend all their time working on Drizzle.
Here's what he sent to the mailing list.

[Read more]Last week at the Drizzle developer day a few people were surprised at the number of plugin interfaces we’ve created already. I created this image to give a sampling of interfaces and plugins:
As you can see, things are quite different from MySQL.

[Read more]OK, so those who know me well can attest to the fact that I can sometimes be a little quick to speak my mind. Sometimes I say snarky things without thinking much. Last week, I blogged a short, snide blog post that Drizzle was not the MySQL Drizzle project and that it was not "shepparded by MySQL" (and, yes, I spelled shepherded incorrectly. Thanks, PeterG).
The blog post referred to Karen Padir's keynote on Tuesday morning, but I misquoted her. Karen said "shepherded by Sun Microsystems", not "shepherded by MySQL". I was actually quoting a blog post from the same day which had misquoted Karen as saying "shepherded by Sun/MySQL".
Karen, I'm sorry I misquoted you. I let my emotions dictate my words, and I should have …
[Read more]As I previously mentioned, on Friday I attended the Drizzle Developer Day at Sun in Santa Clara. While there I had the chance to speak to the group while everyone ate their salad, pizza, and cookies.
The talk was titles "What Craigslist wants and needs from Drizzle" and is available as a Google Docs presentation here. I've also embedded a version of the slides below.
I should note here, as I did at the talk, that this presentation is neither comprehensive or completely representative. That is to say that I'm sure there are things I've forgotten. Plus, the fact that I was working with MySQL in other high-volume web shops before coming to Craiglist means that there's definitely some personal bias and pet peeves addressed in there too.
Anyway, …
[Read more]I wasn't able to spend the whole day at the Drizzle Developer Day, which was held at the Sun campus on the day after the MySQL Conference, but it was interesting none the less.I enjoyed discussing stuff with Monty Taylor and Stewart Smith and was able to show them some ideas which I hope will inspire more innovation in Drizzle. I would have liked to have had some time to chat with Brian Aker some
