Cloud Computing Expo: San Jose

The Cloud Computing Expo at Fairmont Hotel in san Jose, CA is fast approaching and I plan to be there to learn and meet the folks interested in Cloud Computing. If you plan to be there, dont miss the hands on Cloud Computing BootCamp, also being held at Fairmont hotel on 20th Nov. and is Free.

Led by Williamson, the Cloud Computing Bootcamp will illustrate all the major players and provide a hands-on program with configuration samples, live demos and working setups you can further adapt and play with.

Hope to see you there and chat about how you can leverage the Sun Cloud offerings to build applications for the cloud or build your own clouds.

Behind the scenes at MySQL.com

Many people know I work for MySQL (now a part of Sun Microsystems). Since working in the team that brings you www.mysql.com and its related sites, I've been able to get access to pre-release versions of all of the software that MySQL make. I have tried to keep pretty quiet about what I do for a day job - mainly because I didn't think anyone would be all that interested. I've since found out that people are intensely interested in what we do behind the scenes at MySQL.com. So I figured I should probably let people in on a few secrets - at least those that are for public disclosure.

I'm not sure how often I'll be blogging, or what about, but I hope you will find it interesting.

The State of Open Source Databases: OpenSQL Camp Keynote Featuring Brian Aker

Brian Aker delivers the keynote speech at OpenSQL Camp: State of the Open Source Databases. The presentation begins with a disclaimer:
“There is no way I’m going to tell you exactly where the future of databases go. We have way too many egos in the room to ever even begin a discussion…”
and ends with Aker saying,
“What the hell does that mean?”

OpenSQLCamp - Good Job, Baron!

Kudos to Baron Schwartz, who has shown everyone that you can organize a conference from scratch, without the logistics of a company. He has motivated other people in the community and received spontaneous help, which in turn became a web site, sponsor donations, free food for the participants, T-shirt, bags, internet connection, and a glorious feeling of camaraderie throughout the event.
Well done, Baron!

The picture shows a surprised Baron holding a T-shirt covered with "thank you Baron"s, secretly signed by all participants and finally awarded to him in public.

24 Hour DBT2 run on the Intel X-25M SSD

Following up on my previous post Peter asked if he could see a 24 hour run on the Intel drive…  took me a few days because I am doing some testing on a few other things, but I kicked a run off yesterday before leaving the Vegas airport…  Here ya go:

These are roughly 10 minute TPM averages.  As you can see their is a definate decline in performance the longer the drive is active.   Its realtively small% wise, only about 6% off of peak…  but the delcine is easy to spot.

What’s this mean?  It you beat the hell out of the drive over a long contious period things slow down the longer the drive is in continuous use.   Just an FYI, the drive was 78% full during these tests.
