MySQL University: Low-Level Locking in mysqld and InnoDB

Happy New Year!

MySQL University sessions are starting again after the winter break. This Thursday, we're beginning with Tim Cook's presentation on low-level locking in mysqld and InnoDB – the good, the bad, and the ugly. Tim works in the Performance and Applications Engineering department at Sun Microsystems. Expect to get some deep insights into the inner workings of the MySQL Server and InnoDB.

Tim's based in California, so note that his session will start rather late for Europeans.

For MySQL University sessions, point your browser to this page. You need a browser with a working Flash plugin. You may …

Does Australia hate MySQL?

Australia apparently denied short-term visas to MySQL employees, but it sure hasn't stopped MySQL's progress in the country.

MySQL Proxy: public repo moved to launchpad

MySQL Proxy didn't got a (public) update for half a year now. But these dry times are over now.

We abonded the svn repo a long time ago and it got tricky to keep our internal repository and the external, public one in sync. The backlog of patches to merge over piled up to a point where we could keep up anymore. That was in June 2008.

Now, in January 2009 are up to date again and dropped the user of svn in favour of bzr. This will make inclusing of external changes a lot easier.

Repository

To get the latest source just install bzr and pull it from lauchpad:

$ bzr branch lp:mysql-proxy

Up to today that was giving you the old svn tree, but this is now all fresh, pure bzr.

If you used …

I'm not the weakest link

Joining to global effort of keeping chain-letters alive I'll do my every best in answering Jay's meme.

What are the rules ?

  • Link your original tagger(s), and list these rules on your blog.
  • Share seven facts about yourself in the post - some random, some weird.
  • Tag seven people at the end of your post by leaving their names and the links to their blogs.
  • Let them know they’ve been tagged by leaving a comment on their blogs and/or Twitter.

The seven facts:

  • I've been quiet on the public lighttpd side of my life, but I'm still there hanging out with the other team member that are driving the development now. The are doing very good work. Praise them.

GlassFish @ University of Essex and Frankfurt - Go Campus Ambassadors!

This blog highlights couple of contributions by Campus Ambassadors (CA) from University of Essex and Frankfurt towards GlassFish.

Jenya Kovalchuk (Campus Ambassador in the University of Essex, UK) gave a talk on GlassFish. The pre- and post-conditions of talk are really compelling:

Pre-condition: No one out of 25 present ever heard about GlassFish
Post-condition: Everyone is looking forward to put their hands on, how great it is! dear all, we are approaching labs where …

3rd Gestionale Open Developer Conference

On January the 9th, 2009 I've presented at the 3rd Annual Gestionale Open Developer Conference.

Gestionale Open is an open source ERP gathering interest in Italy, since it is compliant with local laws. This project has been started years ago by an entrepreneur with decades of experience in the field and now it's used by 100s of customers. They have concluded the porting to MySQL, which is now the default database for the product!

There were nearly 100 participants. Gestionale Open has catalyzed the interest of customers, distributors, software developers. It's nice to see complex business applications moving to open source.

The title of my presentation was: "Enterprise Innovation". I've chosen a banal title, but wishing to make an interesting dissertation on why MySQL is fuelling the innovation and who is using MySQL to seed projects and evolve from simple ideas to real business.

MySQL Proxy code now live

It’s done!

Even if it took a while, too long, really, we finally have the MySQL Proxy code out in the open, where it belongs.

As part of this effort, we would also like to make our development process more transparent. To that effect, we’ve also created a Launchpad team that serves as a discussion hub. It comes with a mailing list, reachable at mysql-proxy-discuss@lists.launchpad.net, where we hope to have some interesting discussions about where to take Proxy, what to implement in what way, and of course to offer advice to users.

There’s not much in terms of “process” yet and quite possibly (and hopefully) it will stay this way, but let me outline some of my hopes and plans for going forward:
