Now that it's Friday, I can finally come up for air and say that both the MySQL and Percona Conferences (which I wrote about earlier) surpassed my expectations. Having the two going on semi-concurrently worked out pretty well. At no time did I find myself without at least two sessions I wanted to see. Often times I had to really cut lunch short to make sure I didn't miss anything.

Other MySQL Conference veterans I asked has very similar responses.

There's a ton of other stuff to digest, and I hope to write up some thoughts in the coming days and weeks.

As usual, a big part of the conference for me was being able to meet up with people I don't see often or who I've never met face to face. Meeting up with people solving similar problems at places like Facebook, Google, Mixi, and other high-traffic sites is invaluable.

Okay, so I heard the big news. And just in case you haven’t, here it is from Sheeri Cabral: Oracle Buys Sun. This is a sea-change in the hi-tech world, and the DB part of it will also get rocked, Sun being the home of MySQL. There’s lots of comment in Sheeri’s post, and indeed, all over the database blogging world. I will try here to cover the best of it.

To follow up on Chuck’s post from earlier this week, I want to say that yes, on Monday morning I raced across the office to share the crazy news that Oracle is trying to buy MySQL Sun.  Though, I don’t remember yelling.

But, I did have a real point here and that is that the numbers that he quoted are prior to the Enterprise / Community split that happened late in 2006 and since then, the landscape has changed dramatically.

Today, there are at least 5 different major forks of MySQL to choose from (and I won’t even talk about the already complicated version and storage engine choices that most companies have to make).  I am counting MySQL Community (freely available)l MySQL Enterprise (allowing for enterprise support contracts with Sun); Our Delta  (a patched MySQL Community version); Monty Widenus’ MariaDB; and of course, Drizzle.   I’m sure there are others that I’m forgetting.  This has the …

"Interesting" was probably the most overused word at the MySQL Conference that just ended yesterday. Everyone is waiting to find out more about the Oracle acquisition of Sun. As a community we need to find some synonyms or things will become very tiresome. Personally I vote for intriguing.

A four part tutorial that explains the PHP / MySQL extensions - mysql, mysqli, and pdo_mysql - with simple examples is now accessible from Sun Developer Network. While most of the information presented in the tutorial is available elsewhere in bits and pieces, the real value-add is in the introduction of the MySQL native driver for PHP, mysqlnd.
