FOSDEM 2017 is over… this was again a great MySQL event !

FOSDEM 2017 is over, I brought back home the flu…. but hopefully not only !

Indeed this 2017 edition was very rewarding. We started our FOSDEM with a “fringe” : pre-FOSDEM MySQL Day where we highlighted MySQL 8.0 new features and hosted some talks from MySQL friends.

This first edition of the pre-FOSDEM MySQL Day was a great success. We had up to 70 attendees! I would like to thanks all the speakers: Morgan Tocker, Bernt Marius Johnsen, Øystein Grøvlen, Kenny Gryp, Jean-François Gagné, Dag H. Wanvik, …

Welcome to another post in the series of Percona Live featured tutorial speakers blogs! In these blogs, we’ll highlight some of the tutorial speakers that will be at this year’s Percona Live conference. We’ll also discuss how these tutorials can help you improve your database environment. Make sure to read to the end to get a special Percona Live 2017 registration bonus!

In this Percona Live featured tutorial, we’ll meet Derek Downey (OSDB Practice Advocate, Pythian), David Turner (Storage SRE, Uber) and René Cannaò (MySQL SRE, Dropbox / ProxySQL). Monitoring ProxySQL using Datadog

ProxySQL is a high performance proxy for MySQL and its forks. One of the key features is its ability to handle hundreds of thousands of connections with very low overhead. Datadog is a monitoring service for cloud-scale applications, bringing together data from servers, databases, tools, and services to present a unified view of an entire stack.

Datadog does not yet provide an integration for ProxySQL. So I decided to write an integration by forking the Datadog agent. Read my detailed blog post on TwinDB Blog to learn how to use the ProxySQL-Datadog integration.

The post Monitoring ProxySQL using Datadog appeared first on ovais.tariq.

Setup ProxySQL for High Availability (not a Single Point of Failure)

In this blog post, we’ll look at how to set up ProxySQL for high availability.

During the last few months, we’ve had a lot of opportunities to present and discuss a very powerful tool that will become more and more used in the architectures supporting MySQL: ProxySQL.

ProxySQL is becoming more flexible, solid, performant and used every day (http://www.proxysql.com/ and recent http://www.proxysql.com/compare). You can use ProxySQL for high availability.

The tool is a winner when compared to similar ones, and we should all have a clear(er) idea of how to integrate it in our architectures in order to achieve the best results.

The first thing to keep in mind is that ProxySQL doesn’t natively support any high availability solution. We can setup a cluster of …

MySQL Group Replication, the perfect HA database backend for web hosting

Many web hosting provider are looking for HA solution for the database backend they deliver to their customers.

Galera never became the perfect choice for these environment due to 2 factors:

  1. no DBA really manage the databases
  2. Galera runs database changes in Total Order Isolation

What does that really mean ? In fact, when you are a website hosting provider, you host the website (apache, nginx) on vhosts and you share a database server in which every customer has access to their own schema for their website.

Most of the time, those websites are CMS like Drupal, WordPress or Joomla (and certainly many others sharing the same …

How to migrate from Galera Cluster to MySQL Group Replication

In this article, I will show you how it’s possible to perform an online migration from a 3 members Galera cluster setup (in this case I’m using PXC 5.7.14) to a 3 members MySQL Group Replication cluster setup (MySQL Community 5.7.17).

Don’t forget that before adopting Group Replication as database backend, you should validate that your application do match GR requirements and limitations. When this is validated, you can start !

So first, let’s have a look at the current situation:

We have an application (sysbench 0.5), reading and writing to a Galera Cluster ( …
