MySQL InnoDB Cluster (or only Group Replication) becomes more and more popular. This solution doesn’t attract only experts anymore. On social medias, forums and other discussions, people are asking me what it the best way to migrate a running environment using traditional asynchronous replication [Master -> Slave(s)] to InnoDB Cluster.

The following procedure is what I’m actually recommending. These steps have for objective to reduce the downtime to the minimum for the database service.

2. preparing the future cluster

4. replication from current system
5. creation of the cluster with a single instance

It scales and fails over pretty well, but there are still some limitations that prevent it from running smoothly in a production environment. I worked on an issue recently where a query was too slow when executed in MySQL Cluster. The issue was that Cluster has some restrictions when it comes to push down conditions.

As an example of this, consider the following query using the employees sample database. The query takes a look at the average salary based on how many years the employee has been with the company. Let me be clear: I love ProxySQL, and I think it is a great component for expanding architecture flexibility and high availability. But not all that shines is gold! In this post, I want to correctly set some expectations, and avoid selling carbon for gold (carbon has it’s own uses, while gold has others).
