Towards more diversity of speakers at MySQL Conference and Expo

We (Percona) just announced our Percona Performance Conference, and I wanted to tell you a little more about what we hope to accomplish with this conference. Let me show you some simple math that anyone can do.

There’s a handy iCal download of the conference schedule on the conference website. iCal is a plain [...]

Microsoft Windows IIS FTP Part 3 - The Doorway Folder Trick

Objective: To create a customized login with access to some of the folders in a site. In the previous two parts we learned how to leverage virtual directories and physical folders to offer a lot of control from IIS FTP. Now, what about when we want to have one site administrator have access to more than one, but not all, of the directories in a site? How is this accomplished from within IIS FTP? Note: For the purpose of this discussion, "Folder" and "Directory" are same thing . So let us call "Folder" when referring to something at the disk level, and "Directory" when referring to something within IIS.

Microsoft Windows IIS FTP Part 2 - Directories Virtual/Physical

In previous section, we discussed the ways to use the hidden power of Microsoft\'s FTP server product. We talked about ways to leverage virtual directories along with Windows user accounts.

Leveraging Open Source BI Webcast on February 19

Actuate is sponsoring a webcast about open source BI on February 19 at 11:00 Pacific / 2:00 Eastern. My portion of the presentation will cover topics like who (in general) is using open source BI, reasons for doing so, and some of the challenges faced. I'm not completely done yet but the goal is to help people who want to use open source BI better frame the discussion as they look to sell the idea.

For example, several times I've had to get involved with legal departments when buying support or pro versions. Corporate review of contracts is relatively straightforward, but if the legal department has never seen an open source license they can require some help. They're used to seeing standard clauses, and many times these are not present with open …

MySQL ‘godfather’ Monty leaves MySQL: what’s next?

For those of you who haven’t heard, first go read this: Monty Leaves MySQL Now, let’s play for a bit I think this is a very interesting turn of events that took surprisingly long to happen. Now, what really is an interesting question to me is what will happen next? WARNING: Speculation alert! The following is a [...]

Marten Mickos is leaving Sun amid reorg

I just got news that Marten Mickos, former MySQL CEO, is to depart Sun amid a reorganisation of its infrastructure and database business units. Don’t expect an announcement from Sun on this, but the news is confirmed.

It seems that Sun is combining its Software Infrastructure organization with its Database Group to form a unified open source product group under the leadership of Karen Tegan Padir, vice president of MySQL & Software Infrastructure.

Marten will be transitioning out of Sun by the end of the company’s (current) third quarter.

Marten’s departure is a big loss for Sun and follows quickly after the departures of Monty Widenius and …

你说中文吗?

Do you speak Chinese? And do you plan on running MySQL on DRBD? If you do, this post may be well worth a read. The information in there may be somewhat dated as far as the versions mentioned are concerned, but other than that looks quite helpful.

Disclaimer: my own command of Chinese is not sufficient to actually judge the quality of the information included in the referred post. In case you are a bilingual Chinese/English speaker reading this, any helpful comments would be much appreciated — thanks!

planetmysql.org subscribers, apparently the syndicated feed doesn’t handle multibyte characters too well. Sorry for the garbage that’s appearing in your RSS readers instead of the Chinese characters in the post title…

My 2 cents...

Standing at the sidelines, a few people have asked about my opinion regarding Monty Widenius leaving Sun... And I suppose I probably should offer an opinion about Mårten Mickos departing too.

The big three at MySQL AB... Monty, Mårten and David. None of them are with Sun anymore.
Does that mean the end of MySQL? Certainly not. There is far too much momentum in the community for it to simply disappear overnight.

Of the three... I guess I was a little surprised when David left Sun first. I had imagined that Sun would make space for him in their organization, especially for his campaigning for FOSS in government and to continue MySQL's Anti-Patent pledge.

Monty... I'd like to say that I was surprised but to be honest, I knew that he would leave. It was more a matter of …

The Website is Down: Sales Guy vs. Web Dude

This video has been going around for some time now, but I think its worth the post for those that have yet to see it.

Video Source: The Web Site is Down

MySQL Culture and Business Philosophy Goes Mainstream at Sun

MySQL is undergoing some organisational changes as part of Sun. Mårten Mickos (MySQL AB’s CEO 2001-2008 and SVP at Sun 2008-) is moving on in his life, outside Sun. This is independent of Michael “Monty” Widenius’ recent departure.

I’ve worked for Mårten ever since joining MySQL in 2001, in various capacities (VP Training, VP Consulting, VP Services, VP Engineering, CIO, and since 2005 VP Community Relations). I will obviously miss working with him. At the same time, I can understand and respect his decision to move on to something else, and wish him all the best, whatever his upcoming pursuits will be.

I owe Mårten much of what I’ve achieved in business during this century. I’ve known him since 1981, and counted him as a close friend ever …
