This week carries a new episode in the Sun/Oracle/EU saga: The EU Comission has issued a statement of objections on the acquisition of Sun by Oracle.

Antony has done a bit of magic, considerably speeding up inserts. Since the base implementation does not have persistence, insert speed is particularly important. Copying the 2×89,051 edges for the Tree-of-Life example is now near-instant.

The delete bug has been fixed.

There’s a new Maze example in the OQGRAPH trunk on Launchpad, first introduced in my MySQL University session. I created/inserted a maze of 1 million rooms (that comes to about 3 million edges), and OQGRAPH found the shortest path (122330 steps for this particular maze) in abound one second. Faban 1.0 has just been released. This is a major milestone for this open-source workload creation and test framework. Faban is widely used by many performance geeks to performance test various types of server applications. Amongst open source tools, Faban is unique in that it not only provides a framework to create and run performance/load tests, but also has robust functionality to run monitoring tools. It collects all sorts of configuration information as well to truly help performance engineers keep track of configuration and tuning settings.

for MySQL has been released. This is a maintenance release and is approved for use
in all situations.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything new. In the meantime I’ve been pretty busy. Working on production systems often means that you are not running bleading edge. That’s fine but sometimes you need to look at doing the upgrade and to do that you have to do quite a few checks to see how well newer versions of the software you use will work.

I’ve been in that situation with MySQL. I have quite a few boxes most of which are 5.0 and have been working fine. MySQL-5.1 has been GA now for some time, and I have started to look at it as support for 5.0 is about to end.  I’ve already found quite a few 5.1 bugs, good enough to crash the server, but again that’s to be expected. Heavy loads and odd usage of the server means that MySQL can never be able to test all things.  Replication problems caused a few issues with the first versions of 5.1 but they all seem to have been ironed out now.  The other …
