Hotsos Symposium 2010 — Battle Against Any Guess Is Won

Video fragments of my session posted at the end — read on.

I arrived at Omni Mandalay Hotel on Sunday evening with Dan Norris. I was flying through Chicago and it turned out that Dan was on the same flight and only few rows behind me. Small world.

Preparations for the conference were very chaotic on my part and, of course, I didn’t have either of my presentations ready. I was very stressed and getting sick as well — it looked like a complete disaster waiting to happen. I’d like to say that I was feeling like Doug Burns as he often managed to get sick just before a conference. Of course, I worked on my slides for the last few days as well as on the flight and presentation was slowly getting there but boy was …

Learn how to achieve PCI compliance with MySQL

One of my colleagues, Ryan Lowe, has just heard that his session on PCI compliance with MySQL has been accepted at the upcoming MySQL conference. Ryan is highly qualified to present this topic, and not many people can say that; I certainly can’t claim that title myself. If you’re looking to learn how to make your MySQL installation PCI-compliant, there’s also not a lot of trustworthy information online. Personally — and really, no bias just because he’s my colleague — I think this is a great session for the MySQL conference, which I sometimes thought didn’t have enough diversity of topics in past years. We need more stuff like this to give people a reason to return after they’ve gone for 2 or 3 years in a …

Learn about mk-query-digest at PgEast 2010

I’ll be attending PgEast this year, as I’ve done for the last couple of years, and this year I’ll also be speaking. The topic is query analysis with mk-query-digest. The official description of my talk is as follows:

mk-query-digest is a powerful open-source tool for capturing, filtering, transforming, and aggregating queries, with the ability to do all sorts of other advanced tasks too. By default, it aggregates similar queries together and presents a designed-for-DBAs report with statistics about the most important queries, so you can see where to focus your optimization efforts. This talk shows you how to use mk-query-digest to analyze your Postgres server’s workload.

Friendlist Graph Module for Drupal

At DrupalSouth 2010 (Wellington) after LCA2010, Peter and I implemented a Drupal module as a practical example of how the OQGRAPH engine can be used to enable social networking trickery in any website. The friendlist_graph module (available from GitHub) extends friendlist, which implements basic functionality of friends (2-way) and fans (1-way) for Drupal users.

The friendlist_graph module transposes the friendlist data using an OQGRAPH table, allowing you to query it in new and interesting ways. By adding some extra Drupal Views, it allows you to play Six …

The MySQL Conference will be very good this year

I’m on the voting committee of the MySQL Conference this year. I was on the same committee in 2008. This year’s submissions are awesome. Much different from previous years, for whatever reason.

Some of the proposals are sales pitches, infomercials, or just generally BS, but there’s a gang of sharp-eyed people on the committee who are digging into who submits the proposals, what their company does, etc. Those sessions are getting shot down with bluntly honest reviews and low votes. I have a pretty good reason to believe those votes will carry a lot of weight. But even if they don’t, there simply aren’t many bad proposals! The overwhelming majority of them are very useful technical proposals from people who really know what they are talking about.

This year I truly agree that this is going to be a “deeply technical” event, as it has been …

Community Events February-March

February and March as busy months for Community events.  There's MySQL University, Fosdem, the Seattle MySQL Meetup & Confoo.ca. Here are the details:

  • February 4th - I'll be presenting a talk via MySQL University on Optimizing Queries with Explain.  This talk will be about learning to read the output from MySQL's EXPLAIN command, and optimizing some example queries from the IMDB dataset.  At 5.7G in InnoDB tables imported before any secondary key indexes IMDB is one of my new favorite example databases.  It's about the right size on most desktop PCs that you can measure the difference between a query that's optimized and one that's not.  All material comes courtesy of a new …

How to write a good MySQL conference proposal

I’m on the MySQL conference committee again this year, so I’ll be reading and voting on your session proposals. My past experience is that reading 400 session proposals is a mind-numbing job, and I will be optimizing it to save my time. That means I will be scanning your proposals and deciding very quickly how to vote. I wrote before about how to submit a great proposal, but I’ve refined my opinion since then. Here are my suggestions:

  • Write for two audiences: reviewers and attendees. Both of us want the same thing: to decide as quickly as possible whether your session will be good.
  • Write a strong title/headline. Don’t know how? …
