Some days ago I had the pleasure to interview Andrey Hristov, who is a developer at MySQL AB. He joined the team after working on a new feature for the MySQL Server as part of his master's thesis. You can read the full interview on the MySQL Developer Zone. Enjoy!
Some time ago, our GUI tools development team started a contest to shake out the bugs in the MySQL GUI applications, especially the MySQL Administrator and the MySQL Migration Toolkit.
The contest ran for about 3 months and resulted in more than 170
bug reports, of which the team fixed all the significant ones
(over 120) by now. This is quite impressive, especially
considering the relatively small size of the GUI development
team. I am very happy to see that the quality of these tools has
been improved, they are quite useful, especially for users not
keen on using the command line.
The new MySQL Administrator 1.2.8 and MySQL Migration Toolkit 1.1.8 have now been declared production …

I attended the T-Dose open source event yesterday in Eindhoven
(The Netherlands) and it must be said: the TU/e (Technical
University of Eindhoven) looks pretty nice indeed! Entering the
T-Dose I was a bit overwhelmed by the venue. However, on
Saturday, the crowed was thin. Of course, it was the first time
and I hope it will be as big as FOSDEM in Brussels some
day.
My talk was scheduled for 15:00 so I had a bit time to mix with
the people. To be honest, I'm still not used to this.. There was
a booth of UPservers which is selling certified hardware for
MySQL and MySQL Cluster. It's interesting to actually have
face-to-face contact with people actually having a clue about
hardware.
Gnome and KDE had a booth there as well. Yes, it has evolved a
bit again. However, I left the Linux workstation for MacOS X:
just because I got lazy I guess.
…
A bit late maybe, but I finally setup a new meeting: 29th of
November.
If you're interested you can sign up to attend here: http://mysql.meetup.com/148/. If you don't like to
register with Meetup, then just let me know and I'll sign you up
for the meeting as guest.
On the agenda:
- Get to know each other
- New stuff in MySQL 5.0/5.1
- MySQL Enterprise: The WTH?-questions answered
- New storage engines
- and more..

Yesterday we had our fourth MySQL User Group Meeting here in Hamburg. We had 19 attendees and a very informative talk about Ruby on Rails/Active record, held by Stefan Saasen. Thanks a lot, Stefan! It was quite insightful and we had good discussions and excellent food afterwards. I look forward to our next meeting, which I have already scheduled for February, 5th! So save the date and RSVP!
Some pictures of our meeting are in my Gallery, a PDF of Stefan's talk can be obtained from here. Enjoy and see you next time!

I was really wondered today when I came across really interesting initiative of some women in #phpc IRC channel. They are trying to create some place where PHP women will be able to communicate and feel included in the world of PHP. Ligaya Turmelle (DevZone Roving Reporter) is one of the leaders spearheading the formation of phpwomen.org. She posted an update on their progress her blog recently. She talks about their new website, www.phpwomen.org, their mailing list which can be joined here and their irc channel on freenode.net, #phpwomen. She said:
It is women encouraging women to be active in the greater PHP World. We may be a small group but we have a big impact and are proud of who and what we are. We don’t wish to be exclusive and stand …
[Read more]It is really noticable that the summer is over now. While it was quite silent during the past few months, the last quarter of the year will be packed with conferences and events again.
And we will contribute our share to it, too: in addition to sending speakers to various upcoming events, MySQL will also host two European MySQL User conferences next week. The MySQL Northern Europe Customer Conference will take place in London (UK), on Tuesday, October 17th 2006. Two days later, the MySQL Central Europe Customer Conference will be held in Munich (Germany) on Thursday, October 19th 2006. Both are one-day events, with two tracks of talks in parallel. The sessions will be held by both MySQL employees as well as customers, talking about their experiences in using MySQL …
